Does 7.75 foot lamberts seem not very bright for a stacked set of 9" machines?

Does seem a bit on the underwhelming side. Haven't read the article yet. What was the screen size?

7.75 seems a little on the dim side for a stack, but it's a big 1.0 gain screen and CRT's just don't put out much light. If you scaled that screen down to 96x54, it would have been 12.1 foot-lamberts, and if you turned one projector off, that would be 6 foot-lamberts... If you reconfigured for a 1.3-gain screen, it would have been pushing 8 fL for a single machine... So, I'd guess that was correct.

137" diagonal. Thats big even for 2 CRT's to light up. Guess it also depends how conservative the calibrators were with gain/bias settings. 1.0gain screen isn't helping matters.

Guys, with the proper c elements in my G90's @10ft wide unity gain I am getting roughly 10 foot lamberts and that is with my green gains almost maxed out.

Interesting timing seeing this theater mentioned.

The owner of this theater passed away only months after it was installed, which is why you see the last update on that site from '02. His wife was informed and somewhat of a CRT enthusiast as well and used the theater for a few more years, but ultimately ended up dismantling it around 5 years ago mainly because it was a sore reminder of his passion, as I understand it.

The projectors were left in place and covered up until a few months ago, and the rest of the room (built in a larger space) was gutted and removed years ago.

I wouldn't normally find it appropriate to point this out, but considering I just noted out the theater was removed: I own the projectors for the time being.. So please don't bug them about where they went.

I've only done a basic mechanical setup and put a couple hours on one of them so far, but the machines are from May '02 and have 2800hrs and were conservatively operated (left @ 55 cont/bri), though the screen was quite large. It was an impressive setup, though the mount was a surprisingly poorly constructed handyman-special, considering what he had invested into the pjs!

Thanks for the back-story, banzairun. Judging by the photos I found, Mr. Kobak looked quite young. Very sad.

Glad the projectors found a new home with an enthusiast.

Cheers,
SC

PS - What ever ended up happening with the the giant JVC/Hughes machines?
