So, I am getting a red error 88 on the g90. I can power off for about 1 minutes, then power back on and it works fine for about 5-15 minutes.
Then shuts down with the red 88 error code.

Any ideas? I looked, but can't find anything for that code.

Someone else had this error. Not sure if it was ever resolved but seems to be a problem with the YA board (aren't they all Sad ).

http://www.avsforum.com/t/696871/sony-g-90-error-88-help

According to the manual its an initializing problem. Perhaps a corrupt data file on one of the chips mentioned in the thread. Try contacting John Wyman or Craig. Perhaps they can help get it re-progrmmed if this is the case. How old is the DALLAS chip. Original to the pj or did you replace it when you bought the G90?

Best of luck.

Mine started throwing a 88 error then stopped and than began to flicker. Turned out to be a bad ic421. 1k later problem solved.

Yeah, thats what I was afraid of. But maybe there's another issue that's more easily resolved. Fingers crossed.

Dallas chip is 1year old, but hopefully, that might be the problem. Dreaded thought of the ic421 crap.......

Got a call into Craig, so we will see.

Are all the adjustments eg contrast, brightness working OK?

Phoenixed, how did you know for sure the problem was the IC421? If you just changed the YA it could have been any number of chips. Seems there are certain symptoms such as loss of basic picture controls, shaking image etc when the IC421 goes bad.

I believe I helped him in determining this one.

I'll try to see if I can get the beast to power back up in a little while. And, check the adjustments.

Bad Dallas is usually a code 30. Don, sure it's not a red 89? That would be better, maybe.

Red 88 could be possible boot chip failure. Of course could also be a voltage loss problem. I'm not thinking ic421 just yet.

I looked at some communications I had with John from 2009.

He fixed a YA board that was exhibiting Red 88 when warm. This sounds like your symptom too. He didn't explicitly say what he did to fix the error but it was not IC421 related!! Maybe IC235/236 (but this may have referred to another bad YA).

I'm hoping you dodged a bullet here.

Cliff, I give you a holler in a bit. Got too much stuff going on for the next few hours. Been awake since 4:15 this morning.

Anyways, I fired it back up a few minutes ago. Have control of brightness,, contrast, centering, etc... Picture is perfectly stable. It seems that after it has been running for a while, that's when it shuts off.

Last night we were watching a movie, and it shut off. I powered it down, unplugged it for about 1 minute, and it fired back up. But, it only ran for about 10 more minutes. Then shut off. After that, it would not power back up.

Red 88 every time. Just got a message saying do not turn it back on!! Powering back up could burn all tubes. Sad

Will wait to hear from Craig.

I think I am going to get sick right about now, but then, if it's not ic421, I'll feel better.

Shoot a pm to John. If Craig isn't aware of the fix perhaps John can get you on the right track.

I'm sure at this point in time all potential YA board problems have been seen and a fix (or not if its IC421) figured out. If you're going to have a failure, better now than 5 years ago.

I doubt this is IC421.

Haydng90-

I sent Mac a video and then sent my board to Curt. Which both of them confirmed a bad ic421.

Ok, so now the red 88 comes on after a few hours with the projector shut off.

Come to think of it, it started out being an orange 88. It just changed to red last night.

You may just have a bad ram chip Don. I know I changed some for Terry a few years ago. I want to say I remember his was a red 88 also but I just can't remember for sure. It would possibly be a boot ram chip. I don't think I still have any of those emails.

John isn't doing G90 repairs any more as per his last email. Contact Craig Rounds.
