Make that high end 9" LC beast even quieter than before!

See: http://www.curtpalme.com/G90_fan_mod1.shtm

Thanks for JohnHWman (John) for the instructions.

Interesting, those are the exact fans I put in my 1200X about 5 months ago and it definately helped in making it quiter.

Really? That *is* interesting. I may have to look into it.

Walter: So the two models listed were the exact same ones you used for the 3 rears and one front? How'd you make the front one fit? (Since it's probably too large to go in the convergence tray).

Kal

The model numbers I used were the IXTREMA PRO series(120mm) I bought them at Bigfoot Computers. The convergence tray fan I used wasn't a silenx fan(although I did buy a couple of the 80mm versions), I don't recall which one I used but it was not a 3" unit. I think it was a 120mm unit which I layed down at a 45 degree angle at the opening were the original fan was.
I can't remember if I put a resistor in series with it to cut down the RPM abit or not. It does provide alot more air flow and next to zero noise, I also cut out the grid work of the front panel as that was cauing at lot of air flow noise.

Thanks! Bigfoot doesn't seem to sell any IXTREMA PRO series fans anymore Sad Oh well. I really should replace the convergene tray fan - it's the noisiest of the bunch. Since I'm hushboxed I don't hear the rear ones at all.

Kal

P.S. Cutting out the grid a good idea. I should at least do that. I nice little project over the holidays for my new Dremel tool!

Thats odd that they don't sell them anymore as like I said I just bought them 4 or 5 months ago, are you sure. I believe they said they weren't getting anymore of the old style again.

Hi Kal,

I just checked thier web site and they have all the new style there. They are the 120mm x 38mm. Yes they are a little thicker than the usual fans but they will still fit with alittle work. I think I had to wire them in parallel and plug them both into the one socket. Actually I replaced only two of the back fans, the two flat ones not the angled one because the new silenx are 38mm thick, but even replacing the two helped alot.

Without a doubt that front one is very noisey and very irritating to say the least, that's why I used a bigger fan and layed it down at a 45 and I'm must have slowed it down abit. But I can put my ear right up there and you can't hear it.

I tested it for air flow at the conv output boards(rear of the tray) compared to the stock fan and there was more flow with the bigger fan even after I slowed it down alittle, which of course would be the case because it's alot bigger fan, then slowing it down cut the noise even more. Of course bigger fans are quiter than smaller ones to start with. Plus I sort of isolated it too from the tray frame so the frame wouldn't vibrate or amplify the fan harmonics.

On the back I just put an extention piece(cardboard with some fluff on it to absorb sound) which basically rest on the lid/cover hinges and extends about 18". This just directs the noise straight out the back and some of it gets absorbed. The main thing is the couch is directly below the PJ and the rear noise is deflected away by the cardboard. It's kind of a hokie setup but it's only temporary for now but it works.

Hate to be a party pooper but you may or may not have a problem with your diagonal fan:

Yeah well when it starts whining because it's on a 45 then I'll change it out, they're cheap enough.

Walter,

I'm ready to order some replacement fans for my PJ and the only 120mm ones I can find at bigfootcomputers.com are 25mm thick, not 38mm!

http://www.bigfootcomputers.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=1036&Category_Code=

Looking at the silenx website, the 25mm vs 38mm are both 14dbA and 72CFM. The only difference is that the thinner one is 1400RPM instead of 1200RPM.

Any thoughts?

Edit: Is SilenX still the brand of choice for CRT PJ's in terms of fan replacements? Anyone have any other recommendations?

Kal

Thanks Walter,

I must admit - that doesn't make any sense whatsoever! If I look up all 120mm SilenX fans on their site, only the 25mm ones show up. How's someone supposed to know the actual website product code numbers??

So which ones did you use on your Zenith 1200? Some are in the 40CFM range, others over 70CFM.

Walter - Nope. Still going to use the vented hushbox. It's mostly for the front fan as the hushbox doesn't do much to stop that noise. Might as well replace the 3 back ones as well while I do it.

I started another thread trying to find the actual specs of the 2 fan types as I want to make sure I don't put in lower CFM fans.

See: https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=3606.html

We should take our discussion over there if you don't mine... Don't want to hijack my own thread. Smile
