I was always under the assumption that the hour meter on crt projectors gave you 2 readings.
one for total hours on the chassis and the second reading for hours on the tubes.
I just picked up an NEC XG 135lc projector[img][/img]
The meter tells me the projector has 9300 hours on it and the tubes say 9300 also, but the tube faces show no where near the wear for the number of hours.
I have a 6pg xtra that tells me over 5000 hours on both, but the tube faces are pristine.
Am I wrong in my assumption or is the meter reading faulty?

On some pj's the timer will continue to turn over even when left in standby. Or maybe your NEC was pic muted for long periods.

Just found out the tubes were changed, so that explains it.

Not on an NEC. They only count when the set is actually turned on and running. They dont count standby hours ( and there is no reason to, the set is off... )
There is multiple readings, if they didnt reset the counters when they replaced the tubes then that is why. There is a counter for user run time, which i reset when i first installed the projector to keep track of how many hours i have done. The 3 readings for the tubes indicate how long the tube has run, so if youre setting the convergence and you turn off the red, the red counter stops. If you press picture mute, all 3 of those counters stop. The top reading is the total hours the set has done since it left the factory. This one counts from when you press the on button til when you press the off button, even when in picture mute.
Pressing INFO on the remote while locked on a given source will show info ( youd hope wouldnt you ) including a counter for that source to show how long that source has been selected.

For clarification, no projector will increase the hour meter with the set being 'off'. All sets will increase the hour counter with the power on, but most don't care if the tubes are displaying a picture or not. With the NECs, the 'tube' hour meter will not increase when the unit is in 'picture mute' mode, but the chassis hour meter will.
When I change tubes in an XG, I always reset the bottom most hour meter to indicate the new tube hour count. I leave the rest alone.
Most people won't do that though.
Also, if you ever do a full reset to the system board, all hour counts will reset to 0.

Curt, it also stops counting tube hours when you turn a colour off.
