|
|
Hi all,
I'm new to this board but have been on the site quite a bit over the last 2 weeks going through the wealth of knowledge here. I've owned my 9PG (with service remote) for 12 years now (1300hours total on it). My projector hasn't seen much use in the last 7 years as the room it was installed in was converted to better suit my recording needs and it was kind of ignored. I moved recently and of course the 9PG came with me. I decided it was time to fire up the projector and came across this site , not having set it up in a while and being a little rusty, the wealth of knowledge and tutorials where of great help! It wasn't long before i had it up and running beautifully and asking myself why in the hell did i ever stop using it? I've been using it daily for the last 2 weeks. Last night i think i did a bad thing. Being a tweaker and never satisfied i measured the screen size with a tape measure and found it not to be perfect 16x9 so i widened the picture to make things perfect. I did check inside through the lens and it appeared to be centered and lots of room to the edge.
Last night was the most use it has seen in 12 years. I had it set up at 1600x900 @70Hz and was very happy with the picture quality for regular dvd as well as Blue Ray. I left the room to refill my beverage and upon my return i noticed the red was bleeding on screen. I promptly looked into the lens and saw that it had shattered, I immediately shut it down.
Today i took off the red and green lens to have a look and take pics which are attached. Mainly i was looking for the required air bubble i've been reading about on the site here on the green crt but don't see one. Do i need to bleed it? I am in need of a replacement red CRTat a reasonable price. I've checked Curt's how to and i think it's within my skill level to change out.
I have read that the red CRT's are less prone to breakage so i hope Curt or someone local has a replacement for me.
I'm in Toronto Canada, please contact me.
Attached are pics of my broken tube as well as the green one to show the condition. I'm not an expert but i can see no wear at all on any of the tubes.
Was 1600x900 @70hz a wise choice? I have read here that it can do 1080P? So the question is what is the best setting for the 9pg?
Thank you in advance, Adrian S.

I've got lots, from brand new to good used. Looks like your green is mint, so no need to change the green or blue. Lucky you.
$50 plus shipping for a good used one, $100 for a new one. About $25 to ship. Will email you now.

Thanks Curt, I think considering the condition of the green and blue tubes, a new red one would only make sense. I'm still curious as to why it shattered. Was it me pushing the width too far or just one of those random things?

The CRT is actually fine. What you have there is breaking of the front glass from glycol over pressure. This happens to most NEC tubes after many years. The red one is cheaper and easier to get from Curt, but your blue and green should be bled before they, too, break.
Read up on this, it's been discussed many times. But you do have to pull the tubes out to get to the bleeder screws.

Thanks Tinman, I will take your advice and do just that. I skimmed over the bleeding of the glycol but will re-read and give it a go. The unit is in great shape and I may as well do all i can to ensure it lives a long life.
I've come across the app AnyDVD to allow me to play my blue ray content, is that the one to use or can you recommend any other?
My HTPC:
Core 2 Duo 6700 @ 2.66
4 Gig Ram
Nvidia GTX 460 SE
LG Blue Ray
ATI ATSC Tuner
M-Audio 2496 Sound Card
Not a powerhouse by today's standard but handles HD just fine.

As long as a piece of string. If there is no bubble, take them out and bleed them.

I use a similar setup for my media PC's. Except I also use a silicon dust HDHomerun prime 6 tuner in the rack for cable.
Nice setup!
Anyway, the new VLC will also play boo ray, but I have found it easier to rip them to a HD and then play. I absolutely HATE that damn DRM riddled $ony format, but sadly we are now stuck with it. It's really pathetic when ripping a bluray is faster and easier than trying to LEGALLY play one in a PC.
I miss HDDVD.

Last year or so I bleed my tubes (at least I tried) one of the tubes shot the little screw like a fountain, the second was moderate, and the third... I couldn't add any buble, the glycol didn't want to come out.

Curt-
would any of these work in a "frank'n-yoke" setup for lets say a 1208? Tubes from a NEC might make a pretty good picture. Or better yet a PG Xtra tube. But I haven't tried. Just curious if it would even work. Drive safe man.

These tubes has smaller tubeface than the 180DVB/DMB tubes, and have thinner neck, so it would be insane work to fit in a barco. Also however these are very sharp tubes, but they miss that extra tubeface area for resolving 1080P easily.

If you need any tubes for your 9PG I have the whole RGB set of them I would sell for $50 + shipping I just want them gone since the projector is mostly parted out and they are of the few electronics left.
The red is near mint, a 8+ to 9 no problem, the green and blue I would say are at a 5-6.5 for condition. Red has no visible wear when on, the green and blue do.
Let me know if you want them, I want them outta hea
