Hello,

I just picked up an Epson 6010. I mainly went with it due to hearing the THX pre-sets were "pretty good". While watching 2D content via THX the picture does look very good, but being the HT addict I am, I wonder if I can get the picture better. Thus why I am here....

Here is the review I was referring too... via projector reviews

"Epson provides two THX modes for the Pro Cinema 6010. The first is your basic 2D THX mode. It looks great. It's more accurate than the already very good Natural mode of the 5010, which is technically the "best mode" of the 5010. I suspect that most folks purchasing a Pro Cinema 6010 will not feel the need to have it calibrated, thanks to the THX mode. (Note: Due to things like lamp variation, you will still be able to further improve the 6010 by calibrating it, but the improvement is likely to be very slight)!"

So here is my situation. I live in an area not easily serviced by an ISF/THX calibrator. It would likely cost me around $750 to get someone out here as I would likely need to pay for a plane ticket or gas. The problem I have with this is the cost is high and over time I would assume that the calibration would drift and thus I would need to have it adjusted, also if the projector ever broke down and needed replaced I would be up for another high cost calibration.

That leads me into looking more at the DIY route. I have done some of this in the past but my meter has been in a drawer for about 2 years and it was rather cheap when I purchased it, I think its an Eye-One LT. It's likely drifted and wouldn't give me a good base to start with.

I have researched the new software options and I like Chromapure and would likely combine that with the Eye One D3. So here are my questions.

1. Should I bother calibrating my 6010 that comes with a THX mode, I know it's subjective but will I gain much?

2. If I do go down the DIY route, can I get the Chromapure and D3 standard to start and then when I feel I am reaching a point where I could achieve better results I could then send the D3 back for an upgrade to the pro.

I only hesitate as I picked up the 6010, BDP-93 and 6 pairs of glasses and that was a very big expense and I am trying to justify the worth in calibrating my display further, I know there are benefits, but am doing my homework to make sure I am not wasting my time.

I hope I provided enough information. I have read a ton and used the guide for dummies here a couple years back so I do have some experience, but looking for more for you guys.

Thanks again!
