Right I was sitting down watching a fantastic episode of Stargate SG1, when my recently acquired 3500, went pop, and started strobing / flashing. I thought oh no, its probably the power supply. I pull out the power supply cradle unit and remove the HPVS and replace with a spare. Still does the same thing. Replace the whole cradle with a unit from a Parts 4100 I have, still does the same thing. I felt a bit conquered at that stage. I've swapped all the rear cards with spares as well, didn't help. I'm in NZ as my name says so I dont think there is really a local expert I can contact.
All 3 crt are strobing. I'll upload a video in a sec. I really thought replacing the power supplys would have fixed it, unless my other one is faulty as well?

There's a link to a test image on the screen low res webcam sorry cant seem to get a decent video.
The crts are making a Click click click click real fast ticking sound.
Thanks in advance

I had a hard time hearing the clicking in the video. Is it that 4Hz tick tick tick that is not irregular sounding? Does the sound ever go POP/SNAP like an electric spark? I'm wondering if it is possible for an HV line after the HVPS lead (maybe at the splitter) to leak just a little, but not strong enough to trigger a self-protect? If that failure mode is feasible, maybe that is causing the voltage to dip and thus make the image strobe. This is pure guess on my part and others would have to say if that failure mode is possible. If it is at the splitter or a cable, I'd bet Curt can sell you replacements at a very fair price.
Regardless, if you get everything really dark (I saw the case if off) and carefully LOOK for signs of arcing, perhaps that is it. Again, be careful...32kV is not a little amount of voltage!

Heh john, I'm in Hamilton so for all my luck you may as well be in the states haha.
How do I test to see if the Leads or the splitter is leaking voltage, is that the arcing you are talking about? Would my next step be taking the leads from my other unit and using them to see if that fixes the problem?

Again, two points:
1) not sure if your sound is arc or not. If hearing it, I'd think you could see it discharging in a way similar to how a spark plug looks. Get all the ambient lights off and just use your eyes, I guess. You can also inspect for damage - dark discoloration, etc. This thread talks a little bit about that, and I'm sure you can search and find others.
2) I have no idea if acring would cause this problem -- I'm only suggesting this sense you say there are pops/clicks...
keep folks posted, maybe someone will get an idea. You might also re-name the thread something more specific to what is happening rather than 3500 help. Some might not read the thread if they think it is a 3500-specific problem -- and it might/might not be.
EDIT: I just read another current-post in which someone described a problem where the noise sounded like a rotating fan tapping something...similar to your problem.
