|
|
Hi all, long time CRT projector owner (owned probably 7-8 over the years) and new to Curt's site. I sold Curt one of my first projectors (a Sony 1031Q) many years ago. I am sure it has long since been re-tubed and has found a new home by now. I figured I would start a thread for the Sony 12XX owner's to share screen shots and tweaking tips. Although I think I am at my 1272Q's limits at 1080i... might be time to buy Curt's 1292Q that no one seems to want.
I have the focus and convergence pretty much as sharp and complete as possible. Any other tweaks to get the most from the projector? Thanks!

Thanks, it is called 'Blazer Blue' and available at the Home Depot if anyone is looking for a color for their theater.
Anyone looking for tweaking material, try The Grey on Blu-Ray. All kinds of little snow flakes and such to test your CRT projectors convergence. Can anyone recommend a good Blu-Ray with some 1080/720/480 test patterns?

I find that when setting up and adjusting a projector with lots of enjoyment and easy on the eyes is the VCR "Debbie Does Dallas".
I find it easy to line up her cross hairs and moving images are smooth and flowing.....
And hours of "tweeking" to be very enjoyable......
Not sure if it's out on BluRay just yet but hopefully soon.
I'm sure you old timers know the movie.
Welcome to the forum Mark......

You have to use an old movie to do that...Just so the cross hairs will be there

nice room, nothing beats a dedicated viewing room:thumbsup: | Audiophile wrote: | | I have the focus and convergence pretty much as sharp and complete as possible. in the mid 90's all the manufacturers switched to EM focus, which is a huge upgrade in focus as well as light output. At this point in time, much better machines are now being either sold for very little or given away. So enjoy it as is but spending any money or time on the 1272 is ?

Very nice setup on the 12xx PJ audiophile, I had helped a friend a couple years ago setup his 1272Q in his garage home theater and it looked pretty damn good for a ES projector. We recently took it down and installed a new old stock NEC 9PG Xtra in its place. Unfortunately the sony is no comparison for the NEC, but the nostalgia of the sony remains, and so does the projector in its roadcase at his house. At least he doesn't want to toss it
Mac, this is for you, I couldn't help but laugh when I saw Debbie does Dallas

Ha, you guys have a great sense of humor! It is funny, when my fiancee moved in last year I tried to convince her that we had a Blu-Ray player and a theater and there was no need to bring that boat anchor VCR along. She responded with "what about my old porn"?
Yeah, I figured being a ES machine that there might not be a whole lot more detail I can squeeze out of the 1272Q. What about the controls on the top labeled "do not touch"? I think they are for the raster... turned one years ago with no signal and the tube lit up... backed it down to CRT blacks. All told the old Sony still makes a picture 1000x better than the "upgraded" LCD projector hanging in the conference room at work.

Thanks! No, not calibrated... I do have the old Video Essentials disc (only 480P). I need to start reading some threads on calibration, or buy a 9" machine.

Hey audiophile,
i´ve seen on your page, that you mount the Sony with unistrut on the front and the back of the projector.
How did you fasten the unistrut on the back of the projector? There are no factory holes to fast the projector?
Do you have some pictures of it?
Greets

Good question, the holes on the rear of the 1272Q I believe are mounting holes (same thread size and mounted to chassis like the center mounting holes). The vast majority of the weight of the projector is held by the three holes under the projector's handles. My guess is Sony added the rear holes for additional help in leveling the projector while ceiling mounted. However, you can by NO means ceiling mount the projector by the rear holes only, as the center of gravity of the projector is directly below the handles.
Hope that helps... and feel free to post other 12XX installs/screen shots. Especially screen shots!

Well, that setup certainly looks good. And sharp. Good luck watching porn and the wild life
How would you handle 4:3 sources? In a "4:3 in 16:9 in 4:3" setting?

My only 4:3 source is a LaserDisc player and most of the discs I own are 16:9. The ATSC tuner and Blu-Ray "stretch" 4:3 material to fill the screen.
