I picked up a 6PG+ the other day for $50.
I was told it was a 9PG, but when I got there it turned out to be the 6100.
Not familiar with crt's, so i need some help.
When the guy plugged it in and powered it up all the tubes lit and then went out.
Does this projector need a source to keep the tubes lit?
I have to order a remote from Curt, it came with nothing.
I'm waiting to do that but first I want to remove the lenses to see what the tubes look like and to get an answer to my tube lighting up question.

Familiarize yourself with the set:

Yes you need a source to get a constant picture from the set, however you can access to the internal test patterns from the operation menu, which you can access with the buttons at the back of the machine. The easiest solution to hook up the machine to get a VGA to RGBHV cable and connect to a computer, it will handle resolutions for up to 1280*1024, in HT environment it handles well 720p or 1080i (even at 96Hz interlaced)

Just note you have a 6PG PLUS, the plus is a notably better projector, IMHO, than the plain PG because it has better convergence options. It will also scan to a slightly higher frequency than the plain PG.

I took the lens off to check out the tube condition and the green looks a bit worn from use with the red and blue in a little better condition.
I'll be playing around a bit more since I received the service remote today.
A little update, the guy I got this one from said I could have the other one he had for a parts machine if I wanted.
I wanted, so I just picked it up and its a 6pg extra with pristine tubes. He removed a bunch of them from a boardroom years ago and they have been sitting in his cellar for years, they're dirty and loaded with cat hair. he was a cat person!
I missed out on 2 9pg's he had.

Well obviously you should use the 6pg extra since it has nice tubes. Both sets throw a really nice image at 1080i.

Too bad there are virtually no parts that swap between the Plus and Xtra...

Like craigr said, use the Xtra if the tubes in it are in better shape...

Ok, I fired the extra up and all the tubes light and they all display test patterns etc etc, but I hooked up my cable box coming out of the component outputs into a transcoder and then the rgbhv outputs into the projector. The red and green tubes show a picture but I get no picture from the blue tube. I swapped out the component cables with new ones and no difference. Am I doing something wrong?

Have you ever had the transcoder working with anything else to verify it actually works ?

Did you at least ohm out your RGBHV cables to be sure they have continuity ? Did you swap green for blue, etc ?

Did you hit the KELVIN(thanks Case, been so long...) or Brightness button on your remote when you had the signal going to the projector ?

With NEC's it can be anything of a dozen or more possibilities. Did you check the white balance settings aren't set so blue is taken out of the image completely ?

Does blue come up in the test patterns?

Elaine, I did swap blue for green etc with no changes.
case, don't remember what the hell buttons I pressed! and yes the blue comes up in the test patterns.
all the tubes are very bright and were set at 50 when I first powered it up.
Im in work now but will play around when I get home.

If blue appears in your test patterns, its not the tube, almost certainly, nor its accompanying electronics. Actually do the obvious basics. Check that your source is outputting component first, actually verify that on a second display device. Or better yet, get a computer with a VGA output, set it to 800x600 at 60Hz refresh, and use that as a signal. I've experienced an issue where the belief was that the display was the issue when in fact the component output ended up being automatically turned off as soon as the movie started because there was an HDMI cable hooked up as well. Fun to figure that one out...

Which is why I say do the absolute basics first, it'll save you time in the long run.

Verify source is putting out signal, verify its getting to the transcoder properly, and then that the transcoder is putting out a proper RGBHV signal that can be displayed on a known working display. I've kept my huge Mits presentation monitor for years and years because it would display anything my projector would. I knew if the monitor showed it, the projector should...

Problem solved!
Last night I took your advice Elaine and swapped the green for blue and still no blue picture.
Did it again a little while ago and I got a picture!
Time for new cables.
