Okay, so I got this projector a while ago, and after figuring out source issues and G2 settings this projector has been running fine. Until last week...

One of my roommates was watching a movie off of his ps3 and suddenly, the blue and green tubes went out and the red tube started up a high contrast solid red image. Seen here:

Image of screen

I turned it off so that I wouldn't ruin the tubes, and left it alone for a while. Later I turned it on again, and the warm up screen came up just fine but after 3 seconds it stuttered and the blue and green tubes flickered off. and the red went back to the same problem.

Flash forward to today, I pulled out all the boards to see if perhaps something had blown. Through my wuick visual inspection, everything looked fine. No burned components, no blown caps, nothing obviously wrong. So, I plugged it back in, pressed the power on the back, and pressed the power button on the controller, and something new happened. The furthest board to the right of the projector (when hanging from the ceiling) had an LED that was flickering and the board was making a clicking noise. I took a quick crappy cellphone video showing it here:

Youtube video of problem (sorry for the poor quality)

I tried to show everything useful in that video, and probably showed a lot of extra stuff that it not needed (like the address lights and such). Anyway, ideas? Is this something I can just fix with a careful hand and a soldering iron? or will I need to source a new board?

Thanks

It sounds like your red video amp is crapping out. That's the board that's screwed to the chassis with two screws, and is right over the red CRT socket. All three boards are the same for the R G and B tubes, but since full brightness like that can damage a tube, DO NOT transfer the red video amp to any other tube. INstead, disconnect the red video amp, take it out, and swap the blue one to the red tube.

If I'm right, the red tube will power up fine along with the green, and the blue will obviously will be dead.

If so, I've got replacement amps. If not, you could have an intermittent short in the red tube. I doubt it though.

So I removed the board

This one right?

and it still fails to power up. The tubes still don't turn on. Same blinking and not powering up Sad Replacing the removed board with another tube's board did not help either.

Try reseating the boards and make sure the wires to the controller are not being pinches anywhere. And yes the photo is the board Curt was referring to.

I've re-seated the cards, and no change. In fact, the more times I try to turn on the projector, the less reaction it gives me... Now that light that blinks in the video I showed, no longer blinks...

So now, the projector fails to turn on. It does nothing anymore... Sad

Press the recessed button on the keypad on the projector and on the remote if you're using a Barco remote, then press 0,0,0. That will reset the projector to address 0, and it should fire up.

Well, I reset it, and its back to the last stage. It still does not turn on, and the lone led to the left of the g2 adjustment flickers and makes a subtle clicking noise. So I am back to the first post. Well, its progress!

OK, are you sure you connected the yellow cable coming from the controller board to the RGB switcher board? I had a customer that connected it to the vertical board by accident, and that caused all sorts of problems.

It looks like everything is connected correctly on that board. However, once re connecting everything this time, new lights came on in the g2. In the diagnostic lights , the red light and the 4 to the right of it are now flashing along with that lone light on the board.

So the red light is scan failure right? So I believe that means H/V boards right? What should I look for?

Thanks for your help so far, its nice to have help troubleshooting this!

It could be your Red tube has a bad video amp as Curt suggested or you have a short in the Red tube.

The good thing is Curt has a Sencore as I remember and good Red tubes are the easiest to find. Are you sure the Green and Blue tubes turned off completely ?

But I removed the AMP from the red tube and it still failed to turn on. I also replaced it with the amp from the green tube and it still failed to turn on. I no longer get that red screen, it just stays dark now. I only see the diag lights on the G2 at this point.

OK, wait a sec, you need to be more specific. You said the set doesn't come on, so I ASSUMED the set didn't turn on at all. Smile

So the set turns on, but there's no light out of the tubes.

OK, you've diagnosed this yourself once I read further.. You have a scan fail. WHen either the H or V fails, then the set will shut the HV down so you don't burn your tubes.

When the red was super bright, did you hear a loud SNAP? That would indicate a HV arc, and that's nuked either the H or V board. If not,, then try playing with the scan reversal switches. Those are under the H and V boards. Maybe one has a bad contact, or often the spring on the V switch under the V board will come loose, and the switch ends up between the floor and ceiling modes, causing the scan fail.

If not, then package up the H and V boards as well as the red video amp, and send them up. Shoot me an email though at curtpalme@shaw.ca and I'll tell you how to send them in.
