|

I picked up a Barco 1208/2 a while ago. It had been partially disassembled. I got it put together and had it running in the shop pretty well. It had something like 1400 hours on the tubes. It would occasionally make a snapping noise like it was arcing over somewhere. I mounted to the the ceiling and spent awhile aligning it. I had it attached to a PC and running VGA into port 3 running 1080p. Focus was not fully adjusted and not sure 1080p was the best choice to set it up on.
Settled down to watch a show and about an hour into it there was a load snap and the picture went out. It would not completely power up any more. I had an email discussion with Curt and he believes there a big HV leak somewhere. I set the project aside for awhile.
I kept checking Craigslist and found a Barco 1208 for free. This one hadmore hours on it but very little burn in showing on the tubes. It would not take VGA input on port 3 from the PC. I see that some 1208's do not have an extra RGB card connected to port 3. The 1208 chassis is full of cards so I do not know if it has a port 3 card and it is bad or if there is a sync polarity problem. I have a VGA to RGB splitter coming and will try that later.
I set the 1208 up on a table under the other projector and ran an s-video video cable to it from a DVD player to check it out. I was able to get it aligned and I watched a couple of movies in low def on it. Put it back into the corner and there it sits. I will need to get the guys over to help lift the 1208/2 down from the ceiling.

The HV sections for the 1208 and the 1208/2 are the same according to the parts list.
The 1208/2 has the dynamic astigmatism feature as an update from the 1208.
So now the dilemma, should I attempt to swap the HV sections from the working 1208 into the dead 1208/2 or leave well enough alone and run the 1208 and save the 1208/2 for spare tubes/parts?
Try to sell the 1208 and use what ever cash I get to buy parts for the 1208/2?
Any opinions?
Also is there anyone in the Minneapolis, MN area that has experience repairing these?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'd try to get that 1208/2 running in ceiling. First I'd try to start projector with one tube HV cable removed from HV splitter. That would rule out if one of the tubes gun assembly have HV short or tubes HV cable is arching. Remove mains before removing HV cables and you can touch HV cables end to chassis ground to be sure there's no static charce.
It's not uncommon that just moved and installed used projector or tube will have partial or full short caused by debris in gun assembly. Debris have moved inside tube to gun assembly during transport. Sometimes it can be removed by tapping tubes neck gently or electrically blasting it with tube tester or projector normal operation. Partial short could cause loud snap inside tube once in a while and sometimes it shut projector off and sometimes not.
If that doesn't help then swap Quad and eht from spare 1208. EHT board is secured with two screw and after those it can be removed by pulling out. Quad is bolted to projector chassis, but is pretty easy to swap.
If that doesn't help either, there is only HV splitter left. Remember to desolder sensing wire...
