My Runco DTV-991 has been running happily ever since I bought it used when it was just a baby (6 months old) in 2000. At that time it had been factory retubed due to a bad setup by a newbie tech and it ran just fine. After I bought it, I did the setup myself from the NEC manual and kept the brightness and contrast at conservative levels so it has lasted. When I set it up overhead I noticed a screw loose on the panel which left the panel dangling on the side with the 2R4-1 94K board on it. When I tightened it, the projector would go on, briefly show a picture and then click off after a few seconds, showing a F9 error code. I loosened the screw to leave the panel dangling down on one corner again and it has worked beautifully that way for 11 years.

The other day it stopped working with the same symptoms (I give it a picture feed, then after a couple of seconds the picture comes on for a second or two and then the projector shuts off with a F9 error code). If I don't feed a picture input to it, the projector will continue to run and not shut off.

I understand the F9 error code refers to the focus board.

Does anyone know what is going on and what the best (cheapest, easiest) way to fix it? (Loose wire or connector? Have the board repaired or replaced?) I'd rather not lower the projector down if I could get away with it and I have easy access to the boards right now.

Does Curt or anyone have some suggestions?

I can repair the board at $250 incl return shipping. It's a common fault at this point. You might find a used board here or on eBay for less, but there's no telling that it won't fail with the same problem in a very short time. With new parts on the F board, you'll get another 10-15 years out of your focus board. Email me at curtpalme@shaw.ca and I'll tell you how to send it in.

Cheers!
