Hi folks!

Just yesterday, I tried to improve my picture quality on my BD 808s PJ. Till now, it isn't really crystal sharp, no matter what I do with the focusing controls. Of course the optical focusing has been adjusted already Wink
I am aware, that there is an astigmatism setting for each tube as well as dynamic astigmatism controls for various areas. But because I don't have any clue how to set it up without messing it all up, I never touched it.

So, is there a really good step-by-step tutorial on how to set the tubes for perfect focus? I would realyl appreciate any help on this topic!

Then, there's an other thing. I was curious if my PJ would be sharper with a 1080p image (feeding 720p now). The only thing I can tell: The picture is far too wide for the PJ. Even with the horizontal width control set to minimum the edges still overshoot the "borders". Is this a known issue or is there a way around it?

Greets,
Patrick

Better off giving it 1080i i reckon.

If its overshooting the edges of youre screen, and its not too big on the tube faces, your projector is too far back.

Check last two pages for tubes mechanical adjustments.

It wont be sharper because Data's BW is around 75MHz and 1080p needs more for sharp picture, but 1080i would look fine in 808.

I use 1080i96Hz in my BG808s.

There is master width pot at smps sub board to adjust raster width.

But this could be caused your sources wrong 1080p timings for 808. Many hdtv tuners, PS3 and stand alone players have way too short porches for analog crt to work proberly and picture will be cropped at sides. You need scaler to correct this or with pc you need to use custom timings.

Hi folks

Thaks for your replies! You really helped me a lot!

My BD808s is just doing a full autopicture on 1080i/60Hz - although I don't like the 60 Hz framerate due to european PAL/25fps content. Is there some scaler that could ramp the framerate up to, let's say 100 Hz? Or isn't this possible anymore?

If its RGB, there is no PAL. PAL and NTSC are an encoding for S and Composite video.

Im in Australia so i have the same 50Hz signal you have on most things, however most bluray players here will output a 60Hz signal at 1080i if you tell them to, and this will be better than 50Hz. I get no flicker at all at 60Hz, so i dont bother driving the set any harder.

Never liked the stock HD8 lenses. If possible mount some color filtered HD144 or 145 lenses. You can buy the adapter plates here. IMO they are much sharper and were a major improvement to my BD808. The Red and Green built in filters make a huge difference in color accuracy and corner focus was much improved !

I suspect your projector to screen distance is wrong. Remove the Green lens and post a picture of the raster size if you feel comfortable with that...

Well, ok - I have PAL content, that will be sped-up from 25 fps to 60 fps. This results in some "hickups" because the framerates dont really match.
For example: A music-videoclip off youtube with strobe effects will lose this strobe effects on my screen because the framerate doesn't fit. That's what bothers me - and driving the set with 50 fps sucks, because it starts to flicker like crazy (for my sensitive viewing standards Wink )

Perhaps to the "picture too wide" issue: When I set the horizontal width control to zero, the image still overshoots the phosphor area. That's what I mean with "too wide". But I did set up my PJ with 1080i/60 now and things are looking great, except for corner/side focusing.
I tried to play around with the washers below the lenses, but didn't get a real better result. The picture is ok, don't get me wrong, but this last bit in sharpness is missing. ^^
