Hi,
My Marquee 9500 LC project is now almost finished (I will report on this later) and I'm starting to prepare the ceiling mount in the basement. Part of this preparation is the evaluation of the best lenses for the setup.
I'll first describe the setup and then there are my questions:
The lenses mounted on the PJ are HD-10L.
I have a motorized screen (Gain: 1.2) with a useable width of 2.30 meters (90.55''/7.55 feet). It can be extended vertically to 1.80 meters (70.87''/5.90 feet).
The room is almost 5 meters (196.85''/16.40 feet) deep so that the PJ can be mounted at any distance between 0 and 4 meters from the screen.
I would prefer mounting it as far away from the screen as possible.
And this is where it gets complicated:
According to the HD-10 lens throw distance formulas (http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/download.php?id=1469) I get the following results (sorry for the ugly format):
Lens________SW(mm)__SW(in)___F(x)mm_____________F(x)in___________________HTD(in)__HTD(mm)
HD-10L______2300_____90.55____1.21*(SWin + 6.0in)___1.21*(SWmm + 153mm)___116.83___2968.13
HD-10_______2300_____90.55____1.24*(SWin + 4.4in)___1.24*(SWmm + 111mm)___117.74___2989.64
HD-10E______2300_____90.55____1.22*(SWin + 5.3in)___1.22*(SWmm + 134mm)___116.94___2969.48
HD-10GT17___2300_____90.55____1.15*(SWin + 11.2in)__1.15*(SWmm + 285mm)___117.01___2972.75
So the throw distance always keeps almost the same! I thought that the different lens types would have a different magnification factor and thus, would yield more difference in throw distance for the same screen width.
So:
Are my calculations correct?
Is it really true that the lens type doesn't significantly affect the throw distance (although most people talk about this when comparing lenses)?
Is it too correct that the lens type has more to do with the optimum focus range and resolution?
Will I be able to keep the HD-10L or will I have to invest in a replacement (which one?)?
I know, lots of questions and lots of text. Anyway: Thanks for reading!!!
Regards,

Hello
Try the HD10Ls at ground level, set projector H Size at 90 and run your sources into it. See if the edges focus well. You are on the border between HD10Ls working, and needing GT17s.

Nice that this matches my thoughts as I have planned to do all preparations on the ground. Can You describe why I should set the H-Size to 90? I originally wanted to adjust the picture size looking at the tubefaces so that I get optimum centering and phosphor usage. Then do a meticulous mechanical setup so that electronical corrections are minimized. Is there any reason I should't go this way?

Yeah, when first looking at the specs I started to fear that I'm in limbo...

Hello
H Size 90 is optimum and leaves you a small additional adjustment.

Hello Tim,
As the PJ underwent an extensive refurbishment (disassembly, cleaning, more than 140 capacitors changed, resoldering, fan replacement etc.) I will have to make sure that the baseline values still apply.
Therefore I will check that the +85V setting on the LVPS is correct and will do a Width Coil Alignment first (following the service manual procedures) and then do the test. By this I will have a clean reference...

My screen size is close to yours. I think its 98" wide, 2.35. Anyway, I have HD-10Es and love them. Nice focus all the way to the edges. If I remember right, 93" is the minimum for them, but check the lens thread for the specs. I think Curt had a set for sale at a good price. You might want to consider them over the GT17s.

Is it really true that the lens type (for HD10series) doesn't significantly affect the throw distance = YES!!!
Is it too correct that the lens type has more to do with the optimum focus range and resolution? = YES!!!

Hi,
To all of You: Thank You for Your input!
I did basic alignment and tested for optimum throw distance. I got a very good result with a throw distance of 3.1 meters (122''/10.16ft). With perfectly centered raster and optimum phosphor usage the resulting picture filled the screen nicely. After mechanical setup of the tubes and a rough mechanical focus alignment I then did electrical focus, astig adjustment and convergence. The following fine-tuning of mechanical focus with the HD-10L's went smoothly. For all three lenses the optimum setting is near the middle of the adjustment range and corner focus is good too. What I still have to do is scheimpflug ajustment and fine tuning of electrical adjustments.
Next sub-project is the conversion of my EXT-FULLHD V3 3D to a VIM-FULLHD card...
