We've been enjoying our Runco/Barco 708 for about 2 years now. It had 1,350 hours on the clock when we got it and I couldn't see any wear on the tube faces then. Fast forward 2 years and it now has 2,442 hours on it and I still can't make out the slightest wear on the tube faces (I'm using a bright LED flashlight and looking through the lens). When does it become something that you can visually see? I've got the brightness set at 60 (100% light controlled room, 84" screen).

It really depends on the level of contrast that you use. If that level is say at about 50% then it may be many thousands of hours before you see any tube wear higher contrast levels produce tube wear faster.

I was at ~2800 hrs when I first noticed very faint wear on my green tube running modest contrast (lower than factory default).

with my Barco(Runco) 708 I couldn't see any wear at the 2000 hour mark looking through the lenses with a bright LED flashlight. However once I took off the lenses I could easily see the wear, it was also very noticeable if I projection with the image expanded over the virgin phosphor.

OK, that was my favourite reply.... LOL.
I'll take the lenses off and have a better look (just out of curiosity!)
It may not be the sharpest PJ out of most, but it sure is still fun for viewing!
