TV/Projector: All of them!

Posted: Wed Nov 30, 2011 3:14 am    Post subject: Weird Barco 1209s/Runco 1100 problem

So I went to Whistler today to work on a 10K hour Barco 1209s. original owner, super low hours, but thanks to some incompetent programmers who are long gone from the site, the RTI remote would turn the projector on right after 'power off' was pushed. One day a few years ago apparently, the Dish network receiver was also left on, and a 'searching for satellite' signal was burned into all three tubes.

That company brought me the set as it had no picture, and I told them that they needed to retube the set. So I did... and also found that the set had no other issues. SInce I had to reconverge the unit, I took the projector back to the site.. and got no pix. Found that due to the sloppy rack installation, one of the sync wires had been cut by the sliding rack. A quick splice and tucking away of the wires fixed the set.

So I went up today as the customer had upgraded from his old Faroudja to a Denon HDMI switching receiver, a Fury and 1080p, along with Apple TV and BR. The complaint was that the set was out of convergence (Faroudja was running at 720p), but the pix also pulsed.

Got to site, started converging, and found that the pix would shrink greatly in width after about 20 minutes. I had a spare 1209s in the back of the truck (my test chassis), so I swapped out the H output board and the SMPS. Same problem! I also noticed that the pix would pulse a bit before collapsing.

So I swapped the H shift/focus and V output boards. A solid pix! I then noticed that the fans never sped up beyond idle, but they did when I put in the new H shift and V boards. I need to checck the schematics, but I thought that the ambient temp sensor was only on the SMPS, NOw it seems that one other board has one as well, and that was causing the fans not to speed up, causing overheating, and the pix to collapse.

That was a new one on me..

My 1209s service manual doesn't have up to date information of fan system, i guess it have been updated after first units.

My BG808s have temp sensor also at convergence tray for front fan and I guess that 1209s have similar system for front fan.

If I remember correct only two of three 1209s back end fans are controlled by smps sensor and one are controlled by separate sensor. Own sensor for Hsift/focus board fan would make sense, since that's hottest board in back end.

I have his old boards here, and will put them in my test chassis here. The only problem is, his theater was heated to 25 degrees (hotter on the ceiling!), and my shop is only about 15 degrees right now, so I don't know if I can duplicate it right now. Sad
