So, yesterday I watched Avatar on BD in the theater. Very colorful movie, but the story bored me to tears. Takes place in the middle of the 22 century whereby humans are capable of a variety of things, including:
Traveling to another solar system, moving hundreds of thousands of tons of material goods from one star to another, the ability to either sleep for long periods (non-relativistic flight) or travel at great speeds (relativistic flight), clone alien species, find new chemical elements, develop exoskeleton machines, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Yet, the tobacco industry is still going strong as evident of smokers. The mens formal suit is going strong by the lead corporate type wearing a tie, and no one can get the poor ex-marine a better wheelchair (like one that runs on batteries) while he is on a foreign planet.
Then there is the biggest deposit of Unobtainium within "200 clicks". First, what is a click? Are we talking about kilometer? That doesn't seem all that far since they use ground vehicles that are wheeled and tracked to slowly get to the desired location. One might think instead of starting a war with the local natives they might look 200 clicks in another direction.
Then there is Unobtainium altogether. We find ourselves (as a species) able to get from one start to another and move a lot of material goods, but cannot use gas giants as a basic resource. And where is such an example? Well, Pandora is in orbit around a very gas giant.
I have to say that maybe since I had already seen the movie before that maybe I just got a little too analytical this time around.

Well, I think it's a tongue in cheek: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unobtainium
Just my two cents...

barclay66 | I did see that Wiki page before posting and thought how 'convenient' for non-science types to come up with pure BS for science fiction. Someone needs to start breaking the fingers of those claiming the ability to know what science fiction is.
I guess the cast, crew, and the studios were all Cameron's bitches for not asking the most fundamental questions. Considering I use to wear suits, I revolt on every occasion I am forced to wear one--and having to wear one on an alien moon around an alien planet in another star system 100 years in the future shows how much of a bitch one can still be.
Still, I liked the insinuation about tobacco still being popular +100 years from now. Everyone have a smoke on me for that one.
