Ok dumb question i know.....but are there any mods for the 6 pg xtra? I want to give mine to my inlaws but the old man says it is 1080p or it is worthless. Yeah he's one of those guys i would love to send curts way via mail for one of those canadian bitch slaps.

Hi,

Not a dumb question in my opinion.
Looking at the 6PGxtra specifications it is capable of displaying 1080p theoretically.
When talking about 1080p then it's important to define which 1080p You're talking of (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p). If -for example- we're dealing with 1080p/30 then these technical requirements will apply:

1920 Pixels horizontally
1080 Scan lines vertically
30 Frames per second
~36 KHz Horizontal Scan Rate (HSync)
30 Hz Vertical Scan Rate (VSync)
~93 MHz Video Bandwidth required

Already 1080p/30 will need a higher Video Bandwidth than the 6PGxtra has to offer (it has only 80 MHz). It will display the picture but it will look soft and picture detail will be lost.
At 1080p/60 it will be even worse as this would require over 180 MHz Bandwidth. It also might surpass the syncing capabilities already.

So, using a 6PGxtra for 1080p would require a major rework of the video processing chain in order to significantly increase the Video Bandwidth...

I am a 6PG xtra owner (former 9PG xtra, and marquee 7500 owner) Minimal V refresh is about 35Hz I think, so 1080/30 won't go, but there is no real difference between 6PG xtra and 9PG xtra in video bandwidth so say 100MHz, the 6PGx scans to 69kHz which is just enough to display 1080p/60 (~67kHz) however it doesn't look very good compared to the marquee 7500, the NEC gurus are always running their stuff in 1080i/96 which seems to be the optimal fHD solution for ALL PG series projector. But you will need custom timings for the best result, 'kschmidt' has these, maybe he will post here as well.
PS: I am still happy with 720P

For the vast, and I mean virtually everyone out there, without a side by side comparison with exactly equal sources, you'll never be able to actually SEE the difference between a projector which can "fully resolve" 1080p, and one that can simply display it.

Lots of people here who've never actually tried it will no doubt vociferously disagree, of course, and they're entitled to their opinions, of course.

I think the Xtra will make a great image at 1080p, they're very sharp projectors, and have the best color of any out there, don't give it another thought, set that Xtra up at 1080p and listen to your inlaws marvel.

I run 1080I straight out of my Fios box to the projector. I run 1080P out of my Sony 400 disc changer. When I switch from 1080I to 1080P the projector temperature rises up 8-10 degrees.
