Hi Guys
I have a Nec10pg that Curt re-tubed for me maybe 5 years ago.
It has been running flawlessly for the past few years, and displaying a great picture.
A few weeks ago the green tube started lighting up, then dimming.
The picture collapsed into it self, then shut down.
I changed the neck boards around to no effect.
I turned down the green G2
Shocked , the projector started back up. The g2's are adjusted on the low side.
I adjusted the g2's the best I could with out a scope ( as per a old thread on avs).
The unit now starts, may run for a bit, then shuts down. It will keep on trying to start until I unplug it. Once it goes into this sequence, I need to wait a few hours for it to start again.
Is this a failed power supply?
Any ideas?
By the way, I'm using a 20 gain Torus screen
PS: I was running 1080p, and changed to 720p after the problem started
Thanks
Gary

Swap the neck boards between the tubes (eg. blue-green) and watch if the problem is going to the other tube. Or just pull the neck board from the green tube and check the if it is shuting down or not. What is the error code after it is shutting down?

MY guess is that you have leaking caps on the video output board that drives the CRT sockets. A very common problem at this point, and they are a real PITA to repair, as the leaking electrolyte can damage the boards. I've got a 6 Pg here with perfect menus. but no test pattern and no video, go figure. It's somewhere on that board, which is why I've asked for someone to make me some extender boards..

I may be heading to Calgary within the next 10 days, as early as this upcoming weekend FYI.

Thanks for the replies.
I have tried swapping the neck boards around, and the unit is displaying no error codes.
When it's running, it operates perfectly. All fans are operational as far as I can tell.

Curt, I can see no swollen caps, but, I guess that means nothing.
Could it be in the AKB?

On the NECs, they leak out the bottom. Pull the board and look veeerrryyy carefully. Smile

oh and to add to the frustration, I've changed 10 caps on the one here with menus but no video. No change, and all pulled caps checked OK save for 3 of them that were slightly leaky. Go figure.

I put in another board and the video came back, so I know hte problem is in that board.

Had a closer look at the boards. The deflection board looks like a cap has been leaking onto the bottom side. Brown crap stains along the side closest to the system/wave cage. Next time it starts up I'll check and see if the H led goes out. It seems to stay on while the unit attempts to fire up. As soon as I hear the tubes crackle the projector shuts down then will try and start again until unplugged.
When the projector shut down watching a movie, the picture width decreased to the center.

No, that's flux, that's normal. If the HV is coming up, then my guess is that the deflection board is OK. Leaking caps most likely now are throughout the set, and any one could trigger the shutdown or lack of H sweep (or did it collapse vertically?)

OK, it could be an issue on the deflection board, but usually I'd suspect an intermittent drive signal. Keep in mind that ALL caps in that set are now 19-ish years old, so I'd suspect 20-30 caps that are way out of tolerance throughout the set at this point. One or more of which could be causing your problem.
