|
|
I am in the process of upgrading my Electrohome Marquee 8000 to a 8500
i bought the Marquee HD Mods by Draganm + a set of new Focus coils with Stig board etc.
i have fitted everything ok but i get no menu on green??
The menu works fine with the red tube on only or the blue tube on only but is not working with the green tube on only.
All i get is a black solid box where the menu should be??

Hello
Upgrade? Just get an 8500, move your 8000 tubes in if they are nicer.

I agree with Tim, you can't ever really modify an 8000 to an 8500, the CLM, backplane, etc will still be an 8000.
Do keep an eye out for an 8500 chassis. As for your no green issues, you have a bad neck board, no G2 voltage going to the green tube, or a bad video input board. Swap the green video cable on the video input board with the red, and see if the green menu then comes up on the red tube. Do you get green video on the green tube, and is it just the menus that are missing, or is the green tube completely dead?

menu is not working in green only a black box, also the green is not as bright as the red and blue
the astig ajustment menu is only working in red???

The menus are only supposed to come up in green. There's an issue with the CLM, backplane or maybe the VIM. THat's why most of us have given up on the 8000/9000, they're getting really old now.

The board that the CLM and VIM plug into. It's a 3-4 hour job to replace it, you need to take out about 50 screws and completely disassemble the set.

It would have been nice to have had a chance to respond to this sometime between 3AM last night and this morning I cycled with my racing club yesterday 93 miles (148.8 kiloometers) in 95 degree heat so I wasn't up at 3AM surfing the net LOL

The backplance and Mobo were essentially the same between late 1994 and late middle of 1997. that's why they had that crappy little adapter to the ribbon cables and the insulating strip that was left over from the fixed rear heat-sink. The mobo wasn't re-designed unti late 1997 just prior to the Ultra when they put in a proper Ribbon cable socket's and got rid of the jumper wires. It's also why E-home was able to use up the remainder of the old 8000 boards in 1995 by installing them in the early 8110. The early 8110's had all sorts of old 8000 parts in them including neck-cards, VIM's and power supply's.
If 8500 chassis's were readily available in the UK I would have none the less recommended that route simply to get the 34.9KV HVPS. However that wasn't an option and even if it were it would have required an additional $120. postage to ship those 8500 boards overseas to me first.
In short, If I felt that the parts I sent were unable to bring Sarah's chassis up to a full 8500, or there was a cheaper or easier alternative, I would not have recommended this route.

if i have the red gun on the menu is red etc, should it be green all the time?? | as in my e-mail this morning, the set should have done a complete re-initialization after you installed the new CLM? Since the chassis went from V2.0 to V3.4 it's necessary for the chip on the backplane which records things like model number and total hours to re-establish a fresh hand-shake with with the main U34 software chip.
If the set did not completely re-set itself then that needs to happen . It's under utility's menu, service, pass-code 0901, "set initialization- re-set everything.
prior to re-set , You can use Marquee librarian to save your old settings from the RS232 port then re-load them afterwards.
Sarah I am also looking forward to your impressions of the pic quality post mod's. Remember that everything including tube color temps D6500K, Individual tube EM focus, stig, Flare, contrast , brightness, etc. will need to be re-done. Also, After the VDC "line fix" tech bulletin I have found that source brightness needs to be lowered as well as PJ brightness (down to about 30) in order to get good Black levels.
Last but lot least for anyone reading this down the road, In my HD mod's instructions I specifically ask people to do this in well lighted place when your well rested and to take a break after a few hours. 3AM to replace almost every board in a chassis is something I would fine challenging and I can work on these almost blindfolded.
Luckily it seems like there were no major errors during re-assembly and the tubes and boards are safe.

OK, ,maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that the CLM backplane connector was notched differently, so that an 8500 CLM couldn't be put into an 8000 and vice versa. I wasn't sure about the programming in the backplane chip.
I agree, a late model 8000 is similar to an 8110. Thing is, I've gotten rid of most of my 8000 stuff at this point, and the last customer that had a PSI projector said it was an 8500, but in reality it was an 8000, with an 8500 back case on it. Lost of frustration trying to get him going, until we both gave up. It had a strange problem, probably backplane related is the conclusion that we came to, and we decided to give up. He's now looking for a true 8500 chassis to put his 8000 tubes into. I know that's harder to find in the UK though.

Backplane issues are starting to pop up now, not common but possible considering their 15+ years old. I use to just send them to recycling when I cannibalized a chassis but I'll keep one or 2 here just in case.
Sarah's machine on last report is fine, reversed R + B connectors on VIM and FCM, so menu's are green now and the stig works. Easy to do, I know I've done it out in the garage more than once. Expecting a good HD pic out of this one and if anyone needs old 8000 parts for any reason there's a full set now. Cheerio
