Was advised not to put my 9 inch tubes into an 8000 or 8500. The tech said the picture is not higher-rez and that the only improvements are a little brighter picture and better contrast. Can this possibly be true? What do you guys that have both say?

TV/Projector: All of them!

Fire your tech. The 8500 chassis is identical to the 9500. the tubes are what limits the resolution of a typical CRT, so you will get an improvement with 9" tubes, no question about it.

Get him to come here and post his logic behind his statement, it doesn't make any sense... to me at least.

To also counter, you won't see the difference of the 100 lumens between the 1200 of an 8" set and the 1300 of the 9" set. Resolution improvement is where you'll see the biggest difference. You also need to do a killer setup, an 'average' setup of both the 8" and 9" sets won't give you too much difference, but properly set up with a good HD signal, you will see the difference.

Now, if he's talking whether it's worth it, then he could be onto something. With the low price of 9" sets out there, I wouldn't be buying all new tubes and lenses to convert the 8500 to a 9500, but if you've got a trashed 9500 with good tubes and lenses, then by all means drop them into an 8500.

The 9" optics are much better in several respects....

The specs for 8" machines are overstated - yes you can get
the output, but it is at the expense of overdriving the tubes.

Hmmmm, this is interesting. I was told by a former Electrohome engineer that the 9 inch tubes are much better than they 8 inch. With that said, I am curious as to whether an 8500 (with brand new tubes) can effectively resolve 1080P?
