Correct me if I'm wrong but I understand the optimal resolution for the BG801s is 1600x900p (60Hz?).
Will the HDFury3 or Moome HD boxes support these signals if the scaler is able to send it over HDMI?
Before I program my VXP scaler for the custom res I would like to confirm it will work with the Fury, or if I should stick to 720p and increase refresh rate to 72Hz instead?

Aren't the 800 barco's ES focus? Can it come close to resolving 900p?

I'll bet that's the posted maximum spec of the 801s chassis. No way that the tubes can resolve 900p.

Yes the spec is 1600x1200.
I see an improvement in resolution with 1920x1080i over 1280x720p but overall I enjoy the progressive image better. So I wish there was something in between that I could use.
Also I read on here that someone had best results with 900p on this PJ (obviously a PC-based solution). I want to know if an external DAC like the Fury will support the non-standard res.

But keep in mind that CRT specs of resolution are ONLY based on the chassis, from the BNC input connectors to the CRT socket. THe limiting factor of actual projected resolution is the tubes and the setup.No way that an ES focusing tube can properly display 900p.

OK so what's the best I should use? 800p 72 Hz?
From what I've seen with 1080i, there's got to be something in between 720p and 1080p that works.

Yeah, the HDF will easily do 900x1600 as it is well below 149MHz which is the limit on the HDF1... 900x1600p will be soft because the projector will not resolve it. My advice would be to run 1080i 60Hz on your system.
However, if you want to run progressive just do regular old 720p as it is an easy conversion from 1080p for a scaler because it uses even integers. 720p is 720x1280 and 1080p is 1080x1920. Thus:
720=2x360
1080=3x360
1280=2x640
1920=3x640
Therefore 720p and 1080p are both evenly divisible by 360 vertically and 640 horizontally so they are easier to scale and will produce the least amount of scaling artifacts

Thanks. I'm more worried about firmware bugs with these non-standard timings than the Fury's bandwidth. Unless I misunderstand how the device works, would they not have to test and tweak the code for every mode?
If it can't resolve 1600 horizontal pixels why would you recommend 1920 horizontal (even though interlaced)? I see the benefit of running standard old 1080i and 720p, which I have been doing for over a year, but it is almost too easy. I'm ready to tweak some more out of the set now.
If 1080i/720p really are optimal for its resolving power, then how about 1080i 96Hz or 720p 72Hz?

OK so I bought Powerstrip and tried them all, they all work to some degree. I see what you mean about the image being softer when you go to high - never doubted that!
I'm going to try and settle on 1080i/72. What do you think about my timings?
HFP=110 HSW=128 HBP=250 kHz=40.8 VFP=10 VSW=10 VBP=24 Hz=36

Probably fine, though your blanking may be excessive which will cut into the bandwidth making the image less sharp than it could be.

The generic setttings I started with were:
HFP=56 HSW=128 HBP=112 kHz=40 VFP=4 VSW=10 VBP=30 Hz=36
However the image was too wide (overscan) so I increased the horizontal porches and centered the image while keeping the total number of vertical lines fixed.
(ending up with: HFP=110 HSW=128 HBP=250 kHz=40.8 VFP=10 VSW=10 VBP=24 Hz=36)
Is it better to go back to the generic settings and try to use the PJ's controls to reduce the overscan? Or is that going to end up with the same "excessive blanking"?
Thanks!

AV, I don't know the timings of the resolution, but I found a nice compromise in between was 1440x900 for my NEC PG and XG projectors. Granted they are EM focusing sets, but I have a friend with a 1272Q that runs his at 720p-900p and the image looks great (for a ES Set)
As others have said though, the tubes might not resolve the resolution and it would probably wind up too soft and you wouldn't be able to see the scan lines..
Worth a try though

Just as a follow up I can confirm that I now have the HDF3 running at 1600x900p from my scaler (using the timings I reverse engineered from Powerstrip on the laptop). It seems the HDF units have no problem with non-standard res.
