Long time no post, but with string of bad luck I've had for past 18 months, haven't had anything going to discuss.

Just had a house fire, and my house is total loss. HT had Barco G1208s set up, and I had a Sony D50 on a cart. Both are now melted globs, along w/ HD receiver, HD Fury, Altinex, etc..... Crying or Very sad

Has anyone dealt with Insurance on a fire before? My purchases were excellent values, and I'm not sure of "replacement value" determination. Is it simply what a unit is going for at this time, or what was actually spent to purchase originally?

Thanks in advance!

Wow, that's terrible... Sorry for your misfortune! What caused the fire? I hope all the occupants were out safely...

Do a search for insurance... There are at least two threads that I can remember where a couple guys here have had total losses... One was due to a flood and the other an accidental fall from a stand or cart I believe.

I don't remember the verdict, but I believe depending on what kind policy you have, you should be able to get at least enough money to be able to completely replace what you had. Some even speculated that if a guy has the right policy, he may be able to get a check for what would be the only comparable new CRT projector on the market, which would be a VDC Marquee.

I lived in Toledo for 23 years. There is no direct equivalent to a D50 being made anymore, so you have to compare to the Marquee 8500 Ultra with MSRP of $24,100. Replacement cost coverage just might cover you for a new Marquee as no other CRTs are left in production.

Thanks for quick responses -
The Barco was my main unit. Sony was a back-up and for special occasions like outside movies in summer.

The cause was an ice storm we had a couple weeks ago. Pole and transformer iced up and snapped ~ 5:30 am. Transformer spiked and I was the end of the run, so super surge hit me. Everything plugged in burned / melted - surge surpressors did nothing - Fire raced along the home wiring and breaker box. All got out okay. Washington & Erie Twsps and Toledo responded and were there for 10 hours before they felt safe to go. The transformer ended up over neighbors pool, where it dumped the PCP loaded oil - Pool water is now hazardous waste and pool must be buried in HW landfill.
Tim - I'm in Shoreland, where were you b4 sunny Phoenix?

Damn Bengal, that's a seriously messed up story. Sorry to hear it, and hope you make out OK with the insurance. Also check the claims of the surge protectors, you may have some backup insurance there..

Just out of curiosity, what kind of surge protection did you have?

I couple of years ago I was involved in a large fire damage case that destroyed 90% of the house. Several years previous to that I had installed a nice HT in the far end of the finished basement for a previous owner of the house.

Fortunately the new owner had "full replacement value" insurance. I was called in to remove all the HT equipment to evaluate. Everything was undamaged except that everything had a faint smoke odor and while you could not see it, if you wiped a white cloth on anything, it turned black.

The insurance company had no problem at all replacing everything because of the odor. I submitted a proposal for new replacement of everything and it was accepted and paid for. The original projector was actually the last NEC XG1352LC that AVScience sold!
The replacement cost was based on a new VDC.

BTW- the XG is now hanging from my bedroom ceilling - I gave it a good bath!

Curt,
I used 3 o4 of them in various parts of the house, can't remember exactly what brand I had where, but a couple were Brooks and I'm pretty sure I had APC on the HT. Will see if I can id next time I go in there.

Is it true that I won't be able to replace my HD Fury?
What if I went through a friend up north or down in the Caribbean?
