|
|
Is anyone interested in brand new (NOS) Panasonic P43 LUG green tubes? These are the rapid decay green phosphors designed for 3D stereoscopic rendering.
I have a line on quite a few of these in Japan and am thinking about importing them all, but it is a lot of money. The tubes will run around $1400 plus shipping from me in Chicago. If you are not in the USA I could probably arrange to have one or more drop shipped to any part of the world.
I just want to get an idea who might want these before I bring them all in
Kind regards,
craigr

Guys!
I have a few complete Marquee green housings with tinted C element (clear available also) for $150 to $250 plus shipping to house your P43 LUG.

I haven't been able to find a lot of information or feedback on these. Is there a detailed thread somewhere?
Are people pleased with the P43 LUG green tubes for 2D performance or are there any color issues?

I hope Craig doesn't shoot me but P43 tends to flicker below 96hz refresh, and has maybe 20 percent less light output than standard green, so no, it is not ideal for regular viewing.

these work perfectly well for 2d at 60hz.
i am tight on money....... still, otherwise i would have been all over these.
btw, i have a pt22 green currently in use at 60 hz.

I am also using P43 (PT22-30) at 60Hz in BG1209S - there is no "flicker" - that is just mis-information.
There is less light output, but not so much that anyone would notice. The primary
color is shifted slightly, even with a grn c-element, but again - not so much that
anyone would notice. You would need a direct comparison with a photospectrometer
to tell the difference, and i have other things to do just now - maybe next week...

Not "misinformation"; P43 behaved that way when I last worked with it, in the 90's.

I'll add yet another opinion... Barco 1209s had a lot of not all of their sets come with LUG tubes. I believe that they had a special part number designation for the P43 part that was something other than 'P43', but I can't remember.
I have never had any issue running Barco fast phosphor tubes, although I've had a couple of sets where P43 tubes in Marquees would turn the whites pink when you punched up the contrast. I'm not sure if this was specific to Marquee sets when using P43, but have never seen the same behavior in Barcos.

There is no "flicker" at 60 Hz on my system - but the equipment is likely better than what existed in the 90's.

Interesting what Curt saw; P43 seems to reduce output when driven to heat up, I have seen that many times.

Scott would likely have the specs, but it seems that the discussion was had a long time ago on avs -
The decay time for normal green phosphor is considerably longer than the decay for red and blue,
hence the need for the different green phosphor for high refresh rate applications.
Willing to take another critical look, I just spent a relaxing hour reviewing HD material
on my system - things that I am familiar with and have seen on other rigs. And I just
don't see flicker - I see a well defined and clear image, lots of detail - no issues, no flicker.

I think I am going to have to get one here for myself and see it. I have worked with P43 before, but never for actual stereoscopic applications. Curt is trying to find me a toasty P43 for testing, but if he can't find one soon I will buy a new one and check it out.
If you get a chance to put a spectro on your rig I would really appreciate it! I would like to have some actual idea of what the trade off will be against 2D. I don't think I will know for sure until I see how bright white is on my own screen, but I would at least like to know how bad the green will be under saturated. Does anyone know, is a P43 worse than a regular green LUG with a clear CElement in terms of green xy?
And btw there are only 12 of these tubes available from my source. As far as I know all the current LUG style tubes being produced are with regular green phosphor.

Craig - I have such good intentions to run the colorfacts/eye-one pro
on my P43....I will try to get to it next rainey day, and send the results.
However I think you are basically on track - a filtered P43 is likely off by about the
same (or less) xy as a unfiltered normal green - which is to say, not very much,
but noticeable on test patterns. Greens in video look pretty darn good to me.
Whites are blazing white, other colors look normal.... You of course may be much
more sensitive, with all your experience/training...
Light output is ok for me, but I am running a fairly small screen in a dark room.
and only run contrast on BG1209S at 55 to 58 (normal = 80) and only 60Hz.
What I like about it, and this is just my completely unscientific perception, is a lot of clarity
in very fast moving scenes - really good for my racing sim, and all the favorite action movies.....
I do have a used & unmounted P43 9" tube here, but it is not at all 'toasty'
enough for give away - works fine but some goofy light wear patterns.
Might have a spare grn c-element also, but won't be minty perfect.
Wish I was closer enough to get to the 3D meet - that should be great fun!

This is the part that scares me. For my eye, a green with a clear CElement just doesn't cut it for me. The toss up between reduced ghosting and the saturation hit in 2D will be a very tough call for me. One reason why I think I will just need to see for myself on my own screen.
I have no doubt about the ability to mix the primaries to make white, I am sure that can be done with no problem. I am just concerned about the luma level of white being decreased.

See but that right there is the conundrum. Really we can not evaluate real world light out put from rig to rig. It is so dependent on personal settings for contrast, the actual true gain of the screen, variation from tube to tube drive, variation in luma readings from meter to meter, and other factors including psychological ones (being used to seeing your own rig). I think the only way for me to know is to install a P43 in my G90 and see how it compares in terms of light output. Reason two for me to get one

You should come, it will be worth it. Where are you anyway?
Another note on the P43 and Lumagen 3D setup... I am not sure it will pay for another reason. With the Radiance I am able to do some serious resolution timing adjustments. This has allowed me to reduce ghosting to a very low amount compared to stock timings on a CRT. That right there negates some of the P43 benefits.
Furthermore the Radiance 3D firmware is not finished and Patrick is about to change the FPGA so that I can have more freedom in timings configurations. I think there is a chance with the new FPGA that I can almost entirely get rid of all the ghosting with stock phosphors.... long story really.
Kind regards,
craigr

Thanks, I appreciate it. But I would rather own the CElements as I will keep the tube mounted after that and either keep it or sell it to a client who wants a P43.

Well I ordered a brand spanking new Panasonic P43 today so I'll see. However it has to be shipped from Japan... it could be a while They said they're in good shape, but it might be quite some time before shipments will begin again.

Thanks Galen. If your eye1 is close this is very promising and MUCH better than I ever hoped. However, the color that the eye1 has the most trouble with is green so I will remain cautiously optimistic until I get a measurement with my PhotoReasearch.
This is exciting
