Hey y'all,

It's been a while, but I'm getting back into the game.

Caught a lead from Curt for a fellow in Chicagoland with an older-but-retubed NEC 9PG-Xtra...who wanted to shine it on a H-U-G-E screen, using an HD-Fury to translate the output of his Sony Playstation 3.

The projector was in pristine condition, but I rushed the phosphor optimization and blew a transistor on the main board.

Replaced that a week later (because we missed the closing time of apparently the ONLY electronics supply house in Chicago) and it ran fine.

My main complaint is that the Sony PS3 wouldn't play either the Spears&Munsil HD reference or Joe Kane's Digital Video Essentials, even after the latest firmware upgrade...which took for-ev-er due a slow internet connection. Why do we put up with stuff like this? I guess I should say YOU, because I won't stand for it. I'm starting up an e-zine to combat the foolishness that causes this industry to deliver insanity instead of entertainment.

We only got about five foot-lamberts peak white out of it on his 10-foot wide screen, but with the excellent light control he had in his basement entertainment room...it was 'enough'. I'm all about getting enough and not pushing these things to their limits, and have revisited a bunch of projectors I setup conservatively ten years ago...and they all have almost NO wear on their phosphors. (I was quite surprised by a few of them, too, like the Runco 750 that the guy used DAILY while he exercised for two hours...no wear and tear at all!)

That said, I really don't think we're done with CRTs just yet. I'm now setting up an NEC XG85 I got from a client...and simply cannot wait to enjoy hifi again. Like I said, I took some time off...probably about three years or so, although some would say it has been since my mother passed in 2004 that I've been worth anything! LOL, such is life.

Cheers and a hearty hello to my friends and clients who haven't been able to get through to me during that time. I never intended on ignoring any of you, but the stresses of life got the better of me for a while there.

Sincerely,
John
Detroit

Well John

Why not pitch edge blending to these chaps with screens nine foot wide and larger? The new Analog STE100 even has HDCP.

Catch me up on the latest, Tim. Do you have the pricing and suggested projectors listed anywhere?!

Great to hear from you.

The W. Bloomfield police just contacted me about the return of my weapon from those many years ago, I can once again be Johnny Guns. (Ken Whitcomb gave me that handle, at the ISF Boca Raton Resort 'n' Club meetup when Joe Kane showed the video world the first DVD player!)

Cheers

The processor lists around $7K and any CRTs with Moome input boards should be excellent.

CLIFFY!

Hey, I've never BEEN so alive...and the wellness I'm barely getting used to...but I fully believe I had to go through all I did in order to be fully available now, as painful and strange that whole downward spiral certainly was...and I'm sorry for any and all who had to witness that whole deal.

I dropped into Mark Seaton's production facility last time through Chicagoland...that was a blast. Without knowing it, everyone he brought up in conversation I knew, even a few of his clients in Atlanta! It was a true reunion of like-minded/hearted/souled individuals. Although from seeing his goods, I realize he's insane...LOL...what does that make ME?!

Cheers on this sunny but unbelievably ICY day, we'll get together as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
John

But, of course, you lean towards the Electrohome/Christie Digital chasses, LOL! But it has to be HDMI then...

Seven grand IS a bit more reachable than $15k, that was the last retail I knew from you (so we can put a date on the last time we spoke).

Much deep and sincere thanks for YOUR reaching out when I was on my lifedip, those encouragments have never been forgotten.

Cheers!

Whoa. Well, if HE spent time with John Sinclair like I did just over a year ago...he might understand my severe tempering of my hedonistic tendencies. I've SEEN where a lifetime of pursuing personal pleasures can lead...

Plus, you never knew me in the eighties...fellow by the name of MrFixIt here knew me then...and was a mentor of mine for a while! LOL. Don't blame him for any of my misbehavior, though.

So, it is good to know I'm the Charlie Sheen of the Hifi World. Johnny Guns is back. Will work for cash...heh.

Hey, can you tell me the name of this supply house. I have been in Chicago for four years and have never found an electronics supply place. I do everything mail order and this is frustrating when you just need a basic capacitor or something. When I lived in Knoxville I had a HUGE place not a mile down the road from me...

Thanks

We had to go to a place out by O'Hare Airport...damned if I can remember the name, though.

The guys were shocked at the price of this transistor...$22 versus the average of $2 or so.

Let me check with my client and will get back with you as soon as I learn.

I just prompted him with an e-mail, so he may show up first!

Cheers

Thanks for that, Cliffy...gives me one more reason to drive closer to you on the next trip! LOL

I'm going to invest in a few of these, so when they go next time I don't have to waste a day trip. (not that I mind the scenery, of course, OTHER than the ******* on I-94!)

Damn skippy! Smile

John, you should come check out Craig's meet if you get time. Swing through here as well! I'm going to be retubing this summer for a Cedia Meet hope you can make that as well. Some significant changes being made to my setup big dog. Going to be impressive. It is already. Thumbs Up

Johnny Guns, you're back!!

You should've remembered how careful you have to be with those damn NEC pg horizontal-output transistors.

BTW, I'm with in Boston with Doolittle this week, you should give us a call.

LOL, sounds good, Ken.

You and Doo in the same town is always a fun time.

Been too long since I heard both of you laugh.

Cheers!

OH, and the Electronics Supply near O'Hare is TriState Electronics. They have a significant on-line presence as well.

John

Good to hear your back

Last time I saw you I think was downtown at SLOWS BBQ and before that I think it was at Cliffs meet

Its been too long

You still down by eastern market?

There is a VERY good chance I will be headed to Craigs meet so if you want to share the drive, although I might have to stop by Seatons to pick up a bunch of boxes.

Kevin

Kevin!

Mark and I talked about you when I was checking out his space. Pretty funny.

I'd almost forgotten about that Slow's encounter...tryin' to remember who I was with at the time, I think it was my friend Jeff...the national trainer for what used to be called Universal Remote Control (now stupidly called URC, which means nothing to everybody but them). The last few years have been a blur.

Forgive me for not knowing the specifics of Craig's meetup...but the only way right now I could afford to go is if we shared the ride. What is the date and time for that again? This time I'll write it down.

I'll help you schlep those boxes around, and am very interested in helping you make those people happy.

I feel, in a small way, responsible for anyone who got caught up in that debacle...since as far as I know I ran the first review of his loudspeakers. Even THOSE had controversy, since my demo pair got damaged in handling in my studio they weren't photo-worthy. The ones he sent to LA for pictures had the midrange driver in the center speaker reversed...causing an absolute sh*t-storm on some forum. Might have been AVS, I don't know. I discovered it WAY too late to defend myself, and by then I was checking out of all the insanity.

That said, I still HAVE those damaged demos, and would love to measure their response now...heh. I was going to use them as my reference speakers, but it seems I'll do better putting in the old NHT 2.5, 1.5, AC-1 system back! I like them both, but really enjoyed the others. Four SW3 subs, too.

Cheers
