Hey,
I'm having an odd problem with my turntable, hopefully someone can shed some light on what may be going on before I start throwing money at the problem.
When I "try" to play a record it will lower the stylus and then usually raise it right back up and retract the arm. Occasionally it will stay down and play, when this happens it will always play the full side without issues. The problem is more apparent with records that are dirtier but I've had the problem with clean records too.
Is there any common problem that would lead to this happening? I just began using the turntable tonight, but when I last used it around a year ago it didn't seem to be having any problems (that I can remember)
If I hold a light finger over the stylus as it's dropping onto the record to "set it" it seems to make it work better and greatly increases the chances that it will play.
I've removed the platter and looking into the turntable nothing seems to be mechanically out of place or broken. Could this just be a near worn out stylus? I'm very green around turntables and really don't know enough to make an educated guess.
Anyone?
Thanks!
Erik

Since this is a fully automatic player my guess is that it thinks that it already reached the end of the record. You will have to open it up and check for any obstructions, dirt or dust in the detection mechanisms.
Alternatively it may be an electronic problem like the supply dipping. If there are any electrolytic caps in there you may have to replace them.

Thanks for the advice. I did open it up and look over the mechanical bits. Nothing seemed to be out of place and I didn't see any dirt or dust that could be causing problems.
I didn't dive in any deeper as I don't have a service book and didn't want to be digging through it blindly.
Anyway I had to clear all the equipment out of the room as I was doing some painting yesterday. When I hooked everything up again this afternoon it began to behave properly again. I've been listening for an hour now, switching records, starting and stopping and it's been working flawlessly.
If it begins misbehaving again I'll update the thread, hopefully I won't need to!
Thanks,
Erik
