I'm not sure he's a thief, although swindler might be more appropriate? More likely he's just ignorant of what the market of the part?

Doesn't seem like a thief or swindler to me... Perhaps you guys missed the part where he's not just selling the raw Dallas chip, but handling copying the info from the old chip to the new chip, and mailing it back to the buyer, with a guarantee?

Doesn't seem like a bad deal to me compared to buying an EEPROM programmer and learning how to do it yourself... Or am I missing something? Question

The process would take about 3 minutes if you took your time. But then there is putting it in the envelope that they sent you. Then the trip to the mail box.

Point taken, Mac. But, what would a fair price be to do this if you were doing it? Consider all involved: Order and stock the Dallas chips, copy and burn the chips, respond to emails, shipping it back, potential support, and of course the fact that you must have invested in the equipment and knowledge to have the EEPROM burning capability in the first place.

Is it possible it's some of you who are offering services like this too inexpensively rather than the eBay guy being too expensive...

How much is just an EEPROM burner by itself?

A new moderate programmer around 70 bucks. I guess its all in how you look at it. Its just seems a bit much I guess. But it does take some effort. Hey, for all we know it's someone on here that's doing it, LOL.

Totally reasonable, IMHO.

If you read the ad, he's not just selling the chip. He's performing an additional service of copying over existing settings.

This is like complaining that a well-known CRT projector vendor in Arizona has the gall to charge labor on a tube change or fan mod when it's possible to DIY.

Come on.

I dont think anyone is complaining about charging for doing a service. Its more of an issue of the amount for the service.
Hell, I repair the Pioneer freezing boards and I only charge 75 bucks and that includes parts, labor and return shipping.

And that repair takes longer then to reprogram a chip. And the difference in parts cost is not all that much.

You can always ship your G90 to Sony and they'll take of you for a four figure sum.

OK, we get the picture... $150 is too high. Fine. But, I still want to hear from a couple of you (especially you, Mac)... Given all that's involved, what would be a fair price?

Oh, and Mac... How long does it take you to do the Pioneer repair? Because $75 sounds awfully cheap to me considering the expertise involved, and the time it probably took you to research and develop the fix to begin with. If the parts are $20, and you spend even an hour doing the repair and dealing with return shipping, then you're working too cheaply, IMHO. You're time is a limited resource, your expertise is very specialized, and short of junking the receiver, you're probably one of the only games in town. I'm not saying you can charge anything, but $75 does seem cheap to me.

The whole idea of providing a service for a fee is to make money. If you don't like the charges then don't buy them.
Most shops do have a minumum fee for anything. My minumum for anything is $147.50. If I go to someones house for a no heat call and some nim-rod has shut of the emergency switch by accident and all I had to do is flip it back on, you guessed it. If it's at night, I tack on another $50.00 fo after hour charges Wink
