I've been working on this room for quite some time now. Bought the projector from a guy up in the St Louis area about 3 years ago, and just now getting it all set up Before this CRT, I was 100% digital, and couldn't be happier with my decision to switch to a CRT
Now for my issues...
Here are some shots of my room. Please excuse the unfinished mess
Now my questions. The projector is a Vision 3(Marquee 8110). I am very unsatisfied with the projector in it's current position. I would prefer to have it mounted on the ceiling, but this is an external building right behind my house, and the ceiling joists are 2x4's, and not 2x6's. One option would be to brace the ceiling joists in the area that it would be mounted, but I'd still have a hard time trusting it above my head.
My idea is to build a stand, just behind the couch. Something that would elevate it above where your heads would be. That would bring the projector back to about 16' from the screen.
My next issue, is to go with a larger screen. The one up there now is a 106" Da-Lite screen. It's the pull down type because I haven't made a solid firm decision on the size, or if I even like that screen or not. My ultimate goal is to cover the window frames you see behind the screen. But this would require a larger screen(130" minimum).
Will this projector be able to handle the extra distance, along with the larger screen? I hate to do all this work only to find out that the picture will get worse. BTW, this is an entirely light controlled room, with ZERO external light coming in at all. If you turn the lights out, you can not see your hand in front of your face.
Thanks for your help!!!
Nick

well first of the PJ is about 165 pounds, so it's not like your hanging 500 pounds off the ceiling. Think if a medium size guy doing pull-ups up off the ceiling, it's not going to come crashing down. I have know a number of people who have hung marquee's off pre-fabbed 2x 4 ceilings and it's fine. Simple use some channel strut (home depot electrical isle) to bridge 3 joists, attach it with six 5/16th's lag screws and use a stud finder to hit the center of each 1.75 " wide joist. Then hang your mounting bracket off that. I promise it won't come down .
Second, 106" Horizontal or diagonal? 106" diagonal is about max for a single CRT, if it seems too small then your simply sitting too far away. first row should be approx. 9 feet back from the screen.

another thing, get those speakers out of the corners. That will kill the sound quality of even the best speakers. move them to the half-way point between side of room and edge of screen. Scoot them out away from the wall at least 24 inches. Hang a pair of acoustic panels at the first reflection point as a minimum.
Also, while that's a cute little box the Center channel is sitting on it's too low. Get the CC up as high as possible, just below the lower edge of the screen and angled up 5 to 10 degree's to the listening position. Only if you want to undertsand the dialogue in the movie though.

Angling the center up 5-10deg is a great idea, Dragan. Never thought of that. I'll have to give that a try.

I'll work on the speakers, this room is still being all set up, as you can see in the pictures. So nothing is really permanent yet.
The reason for the larger screen isn't for wanting a larger image, but to hide the window frames behind the screen. 106" is working very well for me, just hate seeing those dang window frames behind it and haven't found another solution.
As far as hanging the projector, I'm sure it'll be fine hanging it from the ceiling, just makes me nervous I guess.

I ahd a 12 foot screen with an 8 inch. I think its fine if you already like the pic.
Build a frame around the screen to hide not only the window frames but the pull down housing as well.
Build the frame off the wall so the screen can pull up behind it and the window frames can be hidden as well.

Here is another option,
http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=214732#214732
Behind that wall of a curtain is a window. This approach works two ways, one it hides the window, and two it absorbs speaker reverberations too.
Also the screen behind the frame in the pictures is a 100 inch diagonal and the new one is 119" diagonal which I feel is too big and am going back down in size, amazingly enough, to 106" or 104" diagonal.
Something to think about.

This really gives that theatre look and like Dave mentioned is a big boost for accoustics. Check on flea-bay, there's always someone selling like this

I don't have a back row, and my seating is fairly low. But dialog has always been a bit of a problem, so it's worth a try...
