I picked up a very clean condition 1292 a few days ago and just now had a chance to really play with it, that is, as far
as I could without having yet toted down a video signal source to the workshop where I parked the unit.
It has light, even pattern wear but there's no trace of it visible on the screen since it's operating in the wear area, and the
wear is so even I think it was acquired from projecting only a white field.
I didn't get a remote with it but the on-board keypad will suffice for now. I found the cover that restricts access to the geometry and registration controls, and removed it, but so far I haven't been able to get them to do anything.
Is there a switch somewhere, or some code I have to enter, in order to access the test/service modes?
I had the cover off and got a good look inside the unit, and I have to say, this is classic Sony at their peak. Beautifully
engineered, neatly laid out, and apparently very serviceable. Frankly it makes the Marquee chassis look a little bit
primitive in comparison, not that there's anything wrong with a Marquee.
I'm not above scrapping out a projector that's worth more in parts than as a complete unit, but this 1292 is in such great
overall shape that I think it'll stay together. It's kind of a projection solution in search of a question right now, as I just
refurbished my Marquee and have a second Marquee to convert to a 9500LC, using mint Thomas tubes, no less,
but there's no way I'll part out this 1292 even for the precious HD10F lenses that are on it.
I may even spring for a Moome HDMI input board for it.
The convergence on it is so stable that after I reconfigured it for tabletop installation instead of ceiling mount as it
was when I got it, essentially nothing changed. Try that on a Marquee and you'll have to tweak EVERY geometry setting!
Sony, I am impressed once again. I had a 1270 some years back that I resold, and it also impressed me with its
stability and picture quality.
Incidentally, I'm looking for a few items for this unit.
If you have a remote for a 1292 lying around, let me know.
I'm also looking for the large main top cover and also the lens section cover. One more snap-in lens cover for
the HD-10F lenses would be nice, too. I only got 2 out of 3 of those.
Yeah, both the main and lens section covers are damaged. I'd be happy to replace them with nice examples if I could find them.

try push and hold the TEST key and wait until it asks you to go into Serviceman mode
