Looking for help in Iowa from members who know how to set up a 1209s. The tubes are mint and I want to keep them that way until I sell the unit to ecrabb when I upgrade to a G90.
Thanks Quest

Why would you consider a Sony G90 to be an upgrade from a Barco 1209s with mint tubes ???
Let alone certain replacement part issues with the G90........

I was just going off the list on the web page. I like the 1209s. It fits my personality. I had a G70 and it reminded me of a female who needed a lot of attention.

Unless you give it to Crabb, then I doubt he would take it. He has his eyes on the JVC 4k.

Heh heh heh... I wish, Spanky... Maybe if I win the PowerBall... Then I could afford the 4k, the content to watch on it, and the house that would accommodate a 20-foot wide screen and seating for 30 or 40 of my closest friends. You'll all be invited.
Quest... I'm toast and I have to crash, but I'll email you tomorrow.

If you mean this list: http://www.curtpalme.com/Projector_Rankings.shtm
You need to read the caveats around using the list:
| Quote: | How to use this list (and some caveats):
The list is split into three major groups: Entry-Level, Intermediate, and High Performance CRT projectors. Two projectors in the same major group should be considered similar in performance.
The major groups are further split into sub-groups. Projectors in the same sub-group should be considered as nearly identical in performance. The weight you as an individual place on specific items (i.e. size, fan noise, colour filtering, brightness, availability of parts, etc.) will be far more important than the sub-group rankings that are listed here. In fact, personal choices could easily slide a projector up or down 5-10 notches if you're particularly fussy about something!
As with any purchase decision, it is important to weigh in your own personal requirements against the specifications of a projector before purchasing. DO NOT pick one projector over another simply because it is positioned a couple of notches higher on this list! Do your homework, find out what's best for your needs!
All of the projectors listed below are recent and capable enough for use in a home theater environment for displaying DVD, Cable/Satellite TV, and in most cases HDTV and Blu-ray. We purposely did not list some very old (pre-1985) units that you may come across for free at garage sales, online auctions, etc. Best to leave those projectors where you found them. |

I did finally get to see a G90 recently and it is very impressive I'd say every bit as good as the 909 (based on memory) that I have seen. The biggest difference between a G90 and a stock 1209s (I am assuming you don't have a Runco clone) is the color filtered C elements. The colors are so much better filtered. Once you have seen them you will never go back. But beyond that to my eyes the difference on video at normal viewing distance is subtle (but I don't have the golden eyes some do around here). The G90 is an upgrade but personally as these projectors get older I prefer the easier parts availablity of a 1209s. The 1209s also is quieter fan noise wise which is also a plus. As for not wearing the tubes it is all about contrast and keeping the useage area broad. Barcos are really easy to setup. I'd just practice and practice some more. Do the best you can setting up. Clear the settings and start over. You should be able to get a really nice picture after a few practice runs.
edit: grammar

Hard to believe an uber-projector like the 1209s doesn't have color filtering!! I agree, that's a major issue.

Color filtering is huge, IMHO. Greens and reds just don't look right without filtering. The greens are bluish and the reds orange-ish. You just don't get those beautiful rich yellow-greens or deep, rich rids without color filtering. That said, of course you can watch and enjoy movies on a non-filtered machine - lots of people do. But, like secstate said - once you see a calibrated color-filtered machine...
Also, from reading some of Craig Rounds' comments, the G90 is simply an excellent machine, with awesome dynamic focus, stig, and geometry controls, and that no older (unmodded) machines - including the 1209s - come close.
Of course, none of that means the 1209 isn't an excellent performing machine and that it won't work beautifully to watch movies on. We're splitting hairs. For watching movies, a 9-incher is a 9-incher for the most part.

Yeah, but it was an über-projector that was mostly sold into the commercial display and computer graphics markets where brightness was more important than video color accuracy.

Thanks Nashua,
I am glad a brought some cheer to you day.
I see my next move is to get colored c-elements for green and red. Can anyone on the forum do this?
