I've got this box for my projector (NEC9PG+). It's like a coffee table designed to hold it and with a flip top for easy access. I wanted to do some custom cooling and quiet this puppy down since its a bit of a noise maker while watching movies. Is it all right to run it without the cover? I noticed on these models the convergence changes when you close the cover because of electromagnetic shielding. Obviously that would be gone if I didn't have the cover.
Also is it okay to disconnect the fans on this unit? I wanted to put my own silent fans around the chassis to optimize cooling while minimizing noise. I noticed the cooling scheme is backwards to begin with (for my setup). It exhausts air through the bottom of the chassis which doesn't make any sense when its facing the right way up.

No...The fans are there for a reason. It's a good chance you will drastically reduce the live of the projector. You really should come up with a way to pull air out of the box, but don't disconnect any fans. I don't know about a PG but an XG will display a warning message if the fans are disconnected or stop working. As far as without a cover my XG has been naked for 8 years inside the hush box. So I can safely say I don't think it will effect it running without a case.
I don't trust any of the fan modifications or "quiet" replacement fans. In most cases the people that have done these mods have had major problems down the road.

Hmm...I'm just thinking about how you can build a modern computer with the latest and greatest hardware pulling 400W under load and yet be whisper quiet. Large fans moving large volumes of air at low speeds. I figured since this box I built is designed to fit PG projectors only I can make a cooling system unique to this model.
I care a lot about this thing. I'm going to be taking temperature readings of critical areas before modifying anything to be sure the end result is on par or better than before.
