Hi guys!

My son's 7th birthday was a few days ago and we got the lucky boy a Sony PSP 3000 along with a 8 gig Memory Stick PRO Duo card for storing downloads/demos/movies/etc.

As a long time PS3 user I have to say I'm pretty impressed. The thing is considerably more advanced than any other portable console I've ever seen but I have to admit I haven't really been following the technology...

The thing that seems really confusing is getting movies on to the device. I have a ton of Blu-rays with 'Digital Copies' which are suitable for playback on a PC using Windows Media Player or through an iTunes capable device through the iTunes store like an iPod or iTouch/iPhone.

Ok, easy enough, but what about something like the PSP? Neither of the 'Digital Copy' video formats are compatible with the MPEG-4 H.264 format required by the PSP. It would appear you need to use a converter like http://www.pspvideo9.com/ but that takes many many hours to run and so far it keeps crapping out a few hours into converting a full length movie. (I managed with a little 90 second movie trailer just to make sure the concept works).

So what exactly does Joe and Jane 6 pack do when they buy a movie with a 'Digital Copy' and little Billy says he wants to watch it on his PSP in the car? Am I missing something? You'd think there was a simple plug & play solution! Or is the only option to run third party video conversion software for 6-12 hours and then copy over the resulting file? That seems nuts and way beyond what most people are capable of doing.

Kal,

The way I see it you only have two options. You can either use a converter or you could download the movies in the right format via a torrent site, the second option of course puts you on pretty slippery legal ground so I'd probably just use the converter. Could your problem with the converter possibly be caused by some type of DRM on the source file? I'm not aware of how the digital copy files are protected but I'm thinking this is probably the most likely cause to your problem.

How fast is the computer you're using to convert the files? I would think with a recent quad core and the right software you should be able to run the conversion in much less than 12 hours. But even if it does take that long just let it run overnight and do it as you have time.

Thanks Erik. I considered torrent... seems silly considering these are all movies I owned/purchased.

The computer's a recent quad core. I'm not saying it's slow to convert (I know this takes a ton of time), I just wonder what others who buy these movies and have PSPs do... I can't imagine the average person going to all this effort.

I've been looking into doing something similar, and it seems that Roxio Creator Pro does just about everything I'd want it to do (copy DVDs and BDs for personal backup, transfer movies to portable formats [not sure if it does this with BDs or just DVDs], and rip DVDs and BDs). I haven't really found any other software that does all of these things in one package, so that's one thing that makes it attractive.

Another option for you specifically is CloneDVD mobile, made by the same company that makes AnyDVDHD. The former sounds like exactly what you want, and the latter allows you to make personal copies of stuff that's copyright protected as allowed per fair use.

Thanks! I'll take a look. Clone DVD Mobile seems like the right thing to use: http://www.clonedvd.net/clonedvd-for-mobile/index.html

I have all of the original copies of these movies so I don't see an issue with doing this.

i use winx dvd ripper for ripping movies i've bought to my iPhone to use when travelling. It has a direct setting for PSP.

Pretty good program. but it does take some time to convert.

With it and other converters i've noticed that pulling the bits off DVD seems to be the twitchies/slowest part. I guess that the media servers guys are set up better as they can dump to iPhone or PSP or whatever pretty much on demand as everything is already on the media server.

I've been using DVDFab for awhile. I use it for a variety of conversions (ISO, iPod, avi).

DVD Fab will do it. You can download the 30 day trial and rip a bunch before it expires. There are also some free programs but it takes a few more steps. I have a document somewhere that tells how to go about it. I will see if I can dig it up. I had ripped about 10 movies for my son's PSP for our Disney trip last year and then the wife lost the PSP case with the PSP and all of the memory sticks at the airport.

Thanks for the offer Dan but I have them all already. I wouldn't recommend offering up illegal file sharing publically like this either. Wink
