Hey, guys -

Some of you may remember from another thread I'm helping a friend replace her old digital (dead bulb XGA) with a newer machine...

One potential problem is that the cable in the wall and ceiling is DVI. Of course, the DVI cable is not in conduit (previous owner installed), so obviously she's hoping not to have to rip apart her drywall just to install a new HDMI cable.

She had been using an HDMI-DVI adapter on one end, which worked with one source through the receiver and not with another, but with both if she left the receiver out.

Her setup is cable box and PS3 via HDMI to Yamaha receiver, then HDMI out of receiver to DVI cable with HDMI-DVI adapter... The DVI cable used to plug directly into the projector, but the new projector has no DVI - only HDMI - so we'll have to use another adapter at the projector.

The question I have, is will that mess of cables and adapters work OK with HDMI-DVI adapters on both ends and a DVI cable between? Anybody done that?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,
SC

PS - She got a steal on ebay on the little Sony VPL-AW15 3LCD used, with 1000 hours or so on the bulb for $550 shipped. Her current machine had a pretty long throw for the smallish screen size, and the AW15 along with the Panny AX200 were a couple of the very few that would work with her screen without moving the mount several feet. It should still be a massive upgrade over her old machine.

I don't know about multiple adapters causing problems, it might. But if the previous owner ran the DVI without conduit..... it should be easy enough to just tape a new HDMI cable to the old DVI cable and pull it through the wall. I would try to pull on that old DVI and see if it moves freely, if it does then just replace it.

I'm saying that because most people who do it themselves rarely staple any wires.

Edit: You know what ,I forgot I am having a problem with an eight dollar DVI > HDMI converter on my lumagen... it's shifting the one on one off to green. So yeah I would do away with that DVI if you can.

I thought about trying to pull on it and use it to pull and HDMI cable, or to pull a fish tape in and pull an HDMI back out... But, it looks like part of the run is across joists... To do it, I'd no doubt have to cut the end off the DVI cable, which would obviously mean no going back...

I'll just have to see what I see when I get in there. She lives like 20 miles away, or I'd have gone over and checked it out already.

I'll see what it looks like, try the adapters, and if it gives trouble, then see about pulling cable. If that won't work, we'll just have to make a couple of holes and she can have somebody patch and paint it for a couple hundy.

Thanks, Dave.

At first I thought 'no way' but then I remember that well before the advent of HDMI there was DVI+HDCP, and the HDCP is on pre-defined DVI pins. As such, you shouldn't have a problem doing this. DVI is a subset of the HDMI specification global set, but you naturally will not have, nor need, audio.
