I've been wondering whether it would be possible to use 360 Kinect or PS3 Move with a CRT projector (or any front projector, really). Both of these use visible spectrum cameras situated near the screen to watch how the player moves, so I'm guessing the light coming from the projector will throw them off. I'm guessing that Kinect is a non-starter, especially if you want to use it in a darkened room for CRT, but what about Move? Does the glowing ball help it get detected cleanly even if the projector is in view of the camera?

i'd be curious to find this out too. I've been thinking about getting the kinect. About the light issue, if it's mounted beneath the screen the light wouldn't hit it right? so it shouldn't interfere with the sensing?

I still need to extend the usb up that far, as the xbox is in the back right of the room in a wall rack. doh!

The Kinect uses IR and so will work in complete darkness, and the Move uses both the orbs (for position) and built-in gyroscopes and/or accelerometers for motion.

So, I don't see why either one would be a problem.

I think my Dad might have up a Move for the kids (OK, and me Wink ) for Christmas, so I'll can tell you how it works in a couple of weeks.

Thanks. I'm a PS3 owner so I'm mainly interested in how well Move works. It looks like the orb automatically shines in a different color than is detected in the surroundings, so I'm hoping the CRT light doesn't mess it up. My CRT is floor-mounted so it seems extra problematic (I wonder if the interference would be less with the camera mounted above or below the screen).

Wii is a different situation because the camera is in the controller looking towards the screen. The "sensor bar" is actually just two infrared LEDs the Wii remote tracks. As long as there isn't a lot of IR light coming off your screen for some reason the Wii won't have a problem.

I just googled "PS3 Move front projector" and found several hits - a thread on AVS, some discussion on PSN, and more. From the sounds of it, people are doing it. It seems like the main issues for folks with front-projection setups are as follows:

1. The length of the USB cable. Not really a problem - use an extension cable, passive, or active if necessary.
2. The Move camera can't be "in the light", meaning inside the screen border, because it floods the camera - but, why would it be there?
3. Where to stand in relation to the projector so you're not throwing a shadow on the screen. Seems obvious, but it could be an issue for some folks - like me. I'll probably have to kneel in front of my chair, actually.
4. The Move camera is supposed to be at about shoulder height. This is a problem for me. Might have to go above the screen and point down or if I'm going to kneel with the kids, maybe below the screen will be OK (it's probably 30" off the floor).

My Sony 1272Q Friend has the Xbox Kinect, and we use it all the time at our LAN parties on his 110" Screen with his Sony 1272Q Projector, it works very well, infact too well, how rare is that for something from microsoft?

I cant see why any of those type of devices wouldn't work since they dont actually have anything to do with the display you use, just where they are positioned mainly.

Should be good to go Thumbs Up

I use the PS3 move with my Nec PG, and it works real well. The camera is right below the screen on a small table, and have had no issues other than making sure I stand back far enough so my head doesn't block the PJ throw. Even when I do cast a shadow its not horrible as it is at the very bottom. Works great for the 'shorties', and playing the table tennis game that came on the bundled sports champions disk is my favorite so far- very cool controller, and amazingly acurate and sensitive.

I even use a USB extender for the cam to play upstairs on the LCD.. just make sure you get a USB 2.0 extender otherwis it will not get recognized. Monoprice has a 33' active cable for <$20. Bluetooth controller is key for that setup. The controller has lots of potential, but right now the titles are pretty sparse. My wife's arm was sore the next day after we played a few rounds of table tennis, the accelerometer in the controller doesn't give you a break- if you want to hit hard you need to swing HARD. I hear the boxing game coming out too is the same way- good to get my lazy ass off the couch once in a while... Smile

Some titles you could try are RE5 Gold and the special edition of Dead Space 2. I don't know if the normal edition supports Move. I'm thinking of getting one but I'd rather wait until more games are available. Hoping the price comes down a little too.

Do you have to recalibrate if you stand to the side? My CRT is floor-mounted so it's kind of in the way. I've also already got a center speaker under my screen so I'd have to mount the camera at the top and angle it down, I think.
