|
|
I just installed a chip firmware upgrade in my 9500LC. I now have the extra calibration adjustments
that come in later firmware revisions.
I'm now at version 6, which is Ultra-capable but my machine is not an Ultra.
I'm used to G2 and drive settings. No problem
But now, G2 is its own separate menu, and instead, I now have sub-brightness and drive settings to contend
with in addition to G2.
How is this utilized? It looks like a form of gamma correction since sub-brightness seems to operate in the midrange.

Athan, please check your PMs. I've been asking you for your address so I can ship these CRTs to you.
The sub brightness menu does do something on my projector. At least it does on the internal test patterns.
I have never yet used the RS232 control capability of the Marquee as there is no PC in my home theater and
there's not going to be one. I just use the remote.
I've completed the CRT assembly refurbishment and am now testing a pile of optimized Frankenyokes. The coil values
are right, and I'm working with several examples with magnetics charged to known levels. Once I know which ones
give the best results, I'll then be able to get all of them matched to that magnetic strength.
I'm getting some prettty nice results. I've been able to get a nice sharp well focused image out of the new magnetics
even with the entire CPC set completely removed from the tube. Sharpness retention at high contrast levels is excellent.

The Marquee video system doesn't need a sub-brightness control. That was something that a customer requested so VDC provided. The best thing to do is set the sub-bright controls to mid-range and set G-2 as usual. The sub-bright controls can be adjusted too low and cause black crush though look almost right by having G-2 too high and if sub-bright is adjusted too high there can be white crush and the neck cards will run hotter than necessary.
Both sub-bright and G-2 controls are offset adjustments and there is no need for more than one. Bright and sub-brite at mid-range puts the video amplifiers in the center of their range then G-2 is adjusted for correct cut-off.

This is my first experience with Marquee firmware past version 4.1. I have 5.1 chips but haven't yet used them, and they will go into my
"other" machine. Version 6 is the first version I've used that has this added adjustment.
I'm not sure but I think version 6 is the current version?

Guys!
Electrohome was not famous for issuing bulletins with every firmware revision; these are a few improvements: Early Marquees saw hour meters introduced with v2.0; h linearity was introduced with v3.3, and RS232 comm was improved in v4.0; Curt may have bulletins here that discuss some of these things.

Would it be fair to say that one legitimate use for the sub-brightness adjustment would be to help get a match between the central range of the gamma curves of the red and blue tubes relative to the green tube?
Sub brightness is only available for red and blue. It's not available for green. Not in version 6 firmware, anyway.
