I don't know if that's good or bad.

But it was very easy. No the tube isn't ready for reinstall but it is out of the Ampro housing and ready to be cleaned up.

Here's what I did. I used a Japanese saw to cut around the tube at the housing. I cut next to the tube glass, and then next to the housing on all four sides. Then I put some GOOF OFF on the silicone and dug into the silicone with a small screwdriver and a old style masonry Cut Nail that I dragged in the grove back and forth. This allowed big chunks to come out very easy. Then I took a 2 1/2 inch flexible putty knife and ran it under the tube edge at the housing [very, very, very, carefully} to break the seal of the silicone. Last thing was to gently pry the tube up at the four corners with a very small 1/8" screwdriver the same one I used to dig out the silicone. The Goof off was applied and reapplied a few times.

I used the small screw driver on purpose for this so I couldn't exert too much force there. I'm sure if you get carried away you still could break the tube.

No pressing, no hammers, no gasoline, no real problems, just a little patience.

Maybe a decent way to do it with out the gasoline?

Anyway, it worked great for me.

That all sound good. I would say though that I have found Ampro tubes are easier to remove from their LC tanks than say Barco tubes which will require additional help.

Google "Japanese saw" or "flush-cut saw" and you'll find plenty of examples...

About 15 - 20 minutes to remove 9" tube from Marquee housing, no gasoline required.
Longer to clean all the goop off the mounting plate.

Using a suitably long 1/4" diameter drill bit and a cordless drill, you can punch dozens of holes in the silicone around a tube in a Marquee
housing in just a couple of minutes. Then it's easy to cut through the remaining silicone.

I do recommend pressing the CRT out of the housing once you've weakened the silicone. Shape a wooden block to fit the face of the
CRT (as much as possible, you want maximum area to distribute the pressure) which is thick enough to stick out from the front of the LC assembly by an inch or so. Place the assembly, with block in place, face down on your workbench. Use pipe clamps on both sides of
the assembly (located near the corner of your workbench) to apply gentle, even, and slowly increasing pressure on the LC housing,
pushing it down while the tube stays put. It'll pop out soon enough.

I'm about to have to perform this process on three more LC assemblies. I've got new tubes to install in them.

AmPros are indeed easy. I've taken tubes off of AmPro mounts in five minutes. A carpenter's razor knife is a fine product for this task,
but if you really want to get slick, poke a hole through the silicone in the gap and push a small diameter WOUND guitar string through the hole. Wrap both ends of the string around a couple of sticks and use it as a wire saw. You will be able to saw the silicone all the
way around in about a minute. Get an assistant to keep the tube from popping out and hitting the floor, though.

Heh, it was my first un-potting Embarassed I thought it was too easy. It'll be quite a while before I have to un-pott a Marquee tube, I have Bare L/C chambers to put the pt-22's in.

When I do the marquee chambers on P/J #2 [When I get it] I'll find out about the chambers then.

Maybe it was just me but removing the new P16LNPs I got off of GL a few years ago from the Ampro retro housings drove me NUTs. I did it in the end but arrrgh. Of course those Ampro tubes probably knew I was a Barco guy and decided to stick it to me. Smile

I can NOT believe that you left the C element in the housing when you did that! Shocked

Scratch up a C element and it's virtually worthless! But you can get up to 300 dollars for a good green C element!

You really didn't have to start busting stuff. Even on an 8" LC chamber, it's not that hard to get the tube out.
You just need patience. Your photo implies that you don't have a lot. Wink

I thought I did... I cut out all the silicone.. I let gasoline sit in there for a day... I got more silicone out. I used Curts hammer method. (Curt you might want to add.. 'put on a diaper when it comes to the hammer part') and BANG!!!! what a mess. That was my first attempt ever at it... I know a little more now but I still would be shaking if I had to do it again.

It was not all that hard: I only used a big flat screwdriver to remove the silicone and then an hammer used as a wedge to free the tube from the LC chamber. Just need to be careful and apply only a mild pressure to each angle of the housing, until the tube pop out.
Three tubes removed in about an hour (LC chamber send to a friend Wink ). Maybe I was so fast as I din't care about my worn tubes...

I had success by removing the C element, poking a thin hole through the silicon with a small screwdriver. I was then able to push a thin wire like a piano or guitar string through.
Then just worked this all the way round and the tube just popped out of the old housing.
No sawing digging or slashing of wrists with knives or saws
