TV/Projector: Vidikron Vision 1 - Ultra

Posted: Tue Oct 12, 2010 3:11 pm    Post subject: Constant high pitch noise on Vision 1

Hi,

I just managed to put up my Vision 1 on the ceiling awhile ago. Picture look stunning as compared to my G70. However, there was an annoying continuous sound coming from the center of the projector which I'm not too sure where it come from. It look like it's coming from the HV spiltter but I'm really not too sure what is the problem.

Please refer to my ad in the buy & sell section in this link: https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=23758.html

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hello

If it is a medium-pitch buzz, then the power supply wire harnesses have drooped down into the belly fans. Way to test is disable high voltage (unplug any scan yoke) and listen for the noise.

Hi,
I'm not too sure how to do as per your advise.
Can you explain in more detail. I've open up the cover and the sound really coming from either HV splitter or around the green tube area.

Hello

Unplug a horizontal scan yoke, this will disable high voltage. Restart the projector and listen for the noise.

Hi Tim,

You're absolutely right. After pulling out those plug, the high pitch noise was no more there. After I put back the connector, the sound start buzzing again.

Please advise as what need to be repair or change in order to solve this problem.

Thanks for the help.

Haireez- pulling the yoke plug will disable the HV and the H yoke section. By the sound of Maniac's clip, you have one of the deflection yokes that is buzzing, so you'd need to change that. I have spare deflection yokes if you need them.

Do you mean Horizontal Scan Yoke?

that is what is in Tim's picture.

Hi Curt,

I pulled the Red yoke and start the machine and there's no buzz sound. I 'off' the machine and put the red connector back and pull out the green yoke. There no buzzing sound and repeat the same step for blue.

Therefore, how do I know which yoke is bad?

You don't. When you pull any of those connectors, you shut down the whole HV section and H section of all three tubes.. I would put a straw or a tube of paper in your ear, and hunt with the straw where the sound is coming from. Seriously, that's the only way to do it..

If it sounds like Maniacs then I think it might be the VDM buzzing.

this is good way to find it better. Get a rubber hose, about 1/2 inch diameter 2 foot legnth and find a funnel that will fit to the hose.
then put the end with no funnel to your ear and the funnel end around the set to find the buzzing , open the rear heat sing and listen around there. it could be that as the sound inside the set bounces around. if ti is the capacitors on the VDM you can hot glue or silicone them together.

tim suggested to apply hot glue on the electrolytics near the output transistors of the vdm (9 in total next to each other in groups of 3).
first make sure it is coming from the vdm, keep your ear next to those elec capacitors.

ok i've pulled the deflection v yoke connectors on the VDM and the buzzing is gone. It also sounds like it comes from the VDM and not the yokes.

can it really be caused by the electrolytics ?

Funny thing dennis on my 5 Marquees that work none have that issue? I wonder if it happens more with European units due to the 50hz frequency AC voltage?

Hi Curt,

I'm pretty sure that the sound is coming from the green tube. However the sound is more like a loud crackling sound. Even if you put the cover back, the sound can still be heard. Please advise if the deflection yoke is the culprit.

Last but not least, why is it that after I have completed the convergence and made adjustment to the parameters, it seems like the memory is gone once I turn it 'ON' again?

I also have the buzzing sound coming from the VDM in both projectors. Something I noticed is that the buzzing is louder if I use the VNB’s modified by Mike Parker (specially during start up).

Yepp, TSE explained it in another thread somewhere as to why caps can buzz.
