This is weird and it should be really simple. maybe I'm over thinking it.

I noticed this morning in doing some testing that when I play a movie with 5.1 audio, the rear surrounds are used instead of the side surrounds. I figure maybe I made a mistake. The receiver is set to 8 channel analog, the htpc is using analog outputs.

So, I check the wires and they're fine to the receiver and to the speakers. All correctly labeled and connected. If I go into the realtek audio panel and click on all the speakers they're perfect. So, that tells me the wiring is right and the htpc is configured properly while in windows.

I'm using mpc-hc for video codec, ffdshow audio, reclock. I check everything in graphstudio and it's rendering the mkv files as it should.

Any suggestions?

Dale

well, I solved my own issue by modifying the speaker matrix in ffdshow audio codec to swap the surround channels. Am I correct in thinking that the main surround speakers are on the left and right of your head, not behind? I'm just trying to figure out how this changed when I switched receivers.

Yes, the normal surround speakers in a 5.1 setup are usually called "surround" and are left/right of your head, while the rear/rears in a 6.1/7.1 setup are usually called "surround back".

SL, SR in a 5.1
SL, SB, SR in a 6.1
SL, SR, SBL, SBR in a 7.1

i wish I knew why this changed. I did update ffdshow last week. Perhaps they changed them in the codec. not sure why though. Either way, with the custom speaker matrix it's working as it should, so that's cool.
