So, I got home from work on a Friday two weeks ago, had a bit of time to kill before dinner, and went on craigslist. Stumbled across the projector deal of the year, and only a 15 minute drive from home. Immediately sent an email (about 14 hours after the initial posting). Followed up obsessively with 5 more emails sent from different accounts (in case spam filters were blocking them) over the next 10 days. Never heard a word back, but the listing was still there. Finally, sometime late today, the post was taken down.
So which one of you guys grabbed this out from under my nose????
As Maxwell Smart used to say, "Missed it by that much".
In case you're wondering, the original listing is attached below as a pdf file, but it has been deleted from craigslist.

I'm trying really hard to look on the bright side. It's not like I actually lost anything. All it cost me was the time I spent sending emails and compulsively checking for responses in my inbox, along with repeatedly checking if the listing was still there. Plus checking here every few hours to see if someone else had posted about the awesome projector they just picked up.
At least I don't have to explain to my wife why we need another projector when the one we have works perfectly.

So, you're 15 minutes away, and instead of just driving over there IMMEDIATELY and asking ANY maintenance worker where to find the big old blue projector(ANY one of them would know, I guarantee it...) you wait TEN DAYS to hear back from some emails ?
.... I'd bet the projector is still sitting there, btw...

Trust me, I thought of that. Not really feasible though, it's a big campus - somewhere around 30 academic buildings, plus libraries, labs, etc.

The University where I got my last three FREE projectors, has 80 buildings on campus(I just checked for comparison), and guess how many guys were in charge of getting rid of the projectors ?
One...it took me all of about 5 minutes of talking to a maintenance guy to figure out who that one guy was...but hey, maybe that Barco IS actually gone...

Yikes - in this case, '909' is pronounced as it would be in German: "Nein, ohhh, nein!"

Yeah like Elaine said, I would have driven over there or made some phone calls. Good luck.

Wow I need to look at my automated alerts missed that one. That said the wording is a bit odd I am not sure based on the ad they would have given it to a private party. It seems they wanted to donate some group rather than an individual or maybe that is just what they thought the Barco was normally used for. But who knows. I"d driven the 8-10 hours to Buffalo for that. Hindsight is 20/20 but I'd probably been more aggressive in pursing the projector however it is also quite possible it was gone before you contacted them and they just took their time to take down the ad. I could see a lot of students being interested in it, even if they didn't understand totally what they were getting.

I replied to that ad several times. I would have driven the 12 hours (one way) to get that sucker over a weekend. Never heard a thing from them either.

wow, that would have been an impressive find. No use beating yourself up over something you never had, but I think I would still be calling around at the university to find out who it was that listed it. Where there is one could be others as Paul pointed out in his post.
Although with everyone and their mother pouncing on their add, they may be thinking twice on letting it go for free!

It wasn't me. I got the email from a customer on the day that it got listed, sent 2 emails, and no reply either.

Ahhh,.....It's only a Barco. I would have snagged the lenses off it and pushed the carcas off a cliff

OK, everybody, you know what to do: "Sorry, unrepairable. You're best off getting rid of it - the tubes can be toxic if they break. We might be able to find someone who can haul it away..."

That would be nice, but I doubt those guys are there on the weekend.
Twelve hours - you must be down in Atlanta.

Well, if all we know is that he's 12 hours away, technically he could reside anywhere within this green zone.
