TV/Projector: All of them!

Posted: Sat Jul 10, 2010 10:20 pm    Post subject: 1949 RCA projection TV

Remember that 1949 RCA TV that jkruger posted about here a couple of months ago? It's MINE now! :O)

This is going to be one heck of an interesting restoration project! Wires internally are disconnected, a couple of tubes are missing, but man, the technology in this is sweeeeeet!

I _think_ that the CRT tube fires downward in the set, bounces off a mirror a la the Kloss Novabeam tubes, and is then projected onto about a 20" diagonal screen.

As I said, it will take months to work on, as I 'll need the schematic before I start anything, plus I'll need to put all of the chassis through the dishwasher (yes, that's a fact!) to clean them.

No pix right now, sorry, as the thing is in my truck, but I'll post a whackload once I get home. I'm stoked!

Curt, I think the schematic is in the plastic bag I gave you. I think the original seller's invoice is in there too. The wood is in pretty good shape but it is really dusty, like it was sitting in someone's barn for a long time.

No that dive was AWESOME! Loved that food, and considering you two had the same steak, I'm sure it was something else. Slowly feeling better, the crackers are staying down. Smile

Thanks for that. I don't know the model number yet, in fact the unit doesn't have a back, but it is most likely older than the 630, which dates from the 50s I think. I know that there are several sub chassis in the unit, one for audio, one for video, etc. I will post a bunch of pix when I get home, but I'm sure I can find stuff online for it.

Maybe I should piss off the local RCA service depot and call and harass them for the manual, and complain bitterly when they can't come through. Smile Funny, the local RCA parts guy is a buddy of mine, he'll love this set!

PS, just checked the schematic, mine is older than the 630, mine has an electromagnetic speaker in it, not a dynamic one...

Funny, I realized the other day that we still have OTA broadcasts here in Vancouver. So for now at least, I'll be able to get 4 channels. Maybe if the OTA will go away soon, then I'll need to buy a transmitter from surplus...Smile

No video input jacks on these beasts...

Why not just put a DLP inside and aim it at the screen? Laughing

That's a nice looking set. I like the addition of the record player, radio and tape deck.

BTW, the reel to reel on the Youtube clip above has nothing to do with the RCA TV. That RTR is a 1949/1950 Brush Soundmirror, one of the first NOrth American recorders, technology shamelessly stolen from the Germans in 1945. I've got three of those Brush units here, here's a Youtube clip of those. (not mine).
