I don't know if this post belongs somewhere else on the forum, but here goes. Does anyone work with commercial projection? Specifically for concert/convention type events doing setup, operation and breakdown? I just got five numbers dumped in my lap when someone saw my setup. I'm bored with hanging flat panels and speakers. We just don't get enough dedicated theater work and that's the only stuff that interests me. Oh and this pays about five times better and there is no nine to five BS. I'm thinking a switch from residential to commercial might be right up my alley. Anyone have experience with this type of work? I'd like to hear your perspective.

Guys!
Setting up to do concert and event work would entail a considerable hardware investment, calling for 10,000 lumen or larger DLPs or light valves.

While Tim is correct, you can usually find older pjs in the gov trash heap and other places. I don't believe this market is sensitive to resolution, on/off, or any other specs beside light output.
Kiev,
Stand by. My hankering for some Cajun food is getting the best of me. Well that and the fact I haven't been to LA in three years may bring me over that way for a family reunion in two weeks. I really need to get back to Miami though.

Let me know Spanky, i'm always around.
This would not be a business venture per se. I would be providing my services to work with a staging and events company's equipment on gigs that they schedule. They have the toys and the contracts, I have the strong back and the know how. The guy asked me if i felt comfortable calculating throw distances to choose the proper lens for a setup and pick out and connect the right equipment for the video chain, oh yeah, and did i know how to change the light bulbs! That's about all he could throw at me off the top of his head.
Also there is a separate matter involving a friend of mine who has a business idea involving commercial cinema equipment. I told him my experience was purely residential but I knew enough to help with technical specs and research for writing the business plan. Now all of a sudden I may have an opportunity to work with high end, high powered commercial equipment. And this just falls in my lap.

It depends on what level of commercial If you're dealing with large companies, you bet your ascii that they will want the latest in technologies, and many companies have been burned by losing customers when they have outdated equipment. If you can't cover your costs within 2 years of rental, then forget it. While commercial units don't change models nearly as often as the consumer market, they still outdo themselves every couple of years, requiring replacement.
A buddy of mine in DJ rentals did it right years ago. As soon as he'd recovered the cost of his equipment, he'd sell it at a low use unit at below dealer cost, which pissed off other retailers as he sold stuff all the time to cash strapped DJs, but it also meant he had low hour current stuff for rent with very few repair issues, as he sold it off long before it broke. A great business model for the rental company.
