Yesterday a storm came through and knocked out the internet. It wasn't a direct strike, but I guess we got a surge through the lines. I called AT&T support and tried to get back up and running. The tech support person finally got me up and running after about two hours. I ended up having to use one of my laptops to get a connection. She said that the desktop had a hardware issue that could probably be fixed with a driver update. WRONG! I installed a new driver and it the NIC still doesn't work. I tried to get the router working and after a couple of hours gave up on it. It works wirelessly, but not wired. I then tired to get my desktop working (which was wired to the router) and its NIC isn't working either. Is there anyway to repair my NICs and router or am I going to have to buy NIC cards and a router?
If I have to buy new NICs and a router, then are there any suggestions on what to buy? Frys has a Trendnet NIC for $10 and a router for $20. I am not so worried about a great router, as I am not here enough to worry about it. Matter of fact, I may only be coming back to Atlanta for Cedia and that might be it for the year, as I am probably heading to Brazil for December.

Shhhhhh..... dont say surge to loud around here.....you know whoo may be listening..... LOL.
If the surge came through the cable/phone line and then to your nic card then the routers main chip got hit and flashed over to get to the card. Waste of time trying to repair in my book.
Sounds like any low cost replacements will do fine.

I would make a crossover cable. Then connect the laptop directly to the desktop. This is bypassing the router, switch, modem & anything else. Just connect the two directly together and configure their IP's so they are on the same subnet. Then see if you can ping each other. If you can, then the desktop's NIC is fine.
Have you done a hard reset on the router yet?

CZ,
I have done multiple hard resets.
I don't have a crossover cable and don't want to put the time into making one. I have to go to Frys tomorrow anyway, so I might as well just get the NICs and router. I might try out a crossover cable, if they have one for cheap and return the NICs if it works. Thanks for the idea.
Mac,
Thanks! I have stayed out of the other thread, but if he comes over here then I will say my thoughts.
