These are the tubes that I *think* are compatible with the 8500's. Can someone correct me, or add to the list? This is assuming no major modifications needed. Except maybe a neckboard mod or two. Just swap the coils over and run with it.

180DMB (original model)
180DVB
P16LCP
P16LNN
P16LNQ
P16LNP
PT18-205

I think the PT16's or PT18's are supposedly the sharpest? I can't remember.

Don't forget the G2 mod. Most of those require G2 on pin 6. The DMB requires it on pin 2.

I believe from personal experience that LNQs are extremely sharp tubes. My original FrankenYoke experiments were done in part with a green LNQ and at a lower scan rate I was able to get it to resolve 2048x2048 in the central section of the tube face. No chance of that actually resolving fully on the screen, though...not with only HD-8B lenses to work with.

I think it's safe to say that any Panasonic CRT which has the same cooling chamber style as the DMBs can be made to work with Marquees. I've adapted FAR stranger tubes than that to work in a Marquee, including Sony 09MXF3s and some very odd round faced
simulator tubes as well.

Anyone know if the P16LJE that came in NEC's will swap into the Marquee with or without mod?

Isn't that a narrow necked tube type? If so, you'd need to keep the magnetics with it and probably have to modify all of them.

I don't know if it is narrow necked or not. But it doesn't come up on the quee compatibility chart.
Where the heck do you get these PT16's from!?!?

That's not where I got them.

I once got a pristine green P16LNQ out of a pile of stuff that came from the AmPro bankruptcy auction back in 2000. (I was there and
it was absolutely incredible.) I knew very little back then and panicked when the 8000 I'd put it into made it get real bright (The G2
pin should have gone to pin 6.) I panicked and hit the power button and spot burned the tube.

So far it's the only tube I ever spot burned.

I can say this...it was incredibly sharp. I used that tube for testing purposes for quite some time and got some really sick resolution
capability out of it. It would go far sharper than any HD-8B lens could handle. I ran it at 2048x2048 with a Sencore CM2125 generator,
and it resolved everything.

I know of no tubes I'd rather have in an 8500 than LNQ series tubes, based on that performance. But they'd be best suited for an LC
machine (You'd have to take their own DMB-styel coolant chambers off them first, obviously) as you'd want good lenses to make the
very best of their resolution capacity.

Good to know. For my particular project, I can't go LC. This is because all LC lenses have a longer throw than AC. And my computer room for this particular projector, is length challenged.
Hence, my focus on the 8500.

I haven't looked at Ampro tubes yet, because the tube spec chart for it is generic.

How large is your room? would not a set from a RP box work for a short throw application?

The maxed out raster & throw from my current 8500 *just* made it. Thanks for the suggestion through. Btw I think those special short throw lenses usually max their focus ability at about a ~6' wide screen?

I don't know if they'll do you any good but if you want them, I'll give you a set of HD117-12s out of an AmPro 3600 Retro. I'll even include
the LC housings and C elements but you might have to find some replacement hardware.

You might be able to adapt the Ampro hardware to work in a Marquee. I think this actually wouldn't be all that tough to do.

Just pay shipping and they're yours.

Thanks, CJ. I'm running a 92" wide screen though. From what I've read, those lens aren't good past 66" wide when using max raster. You can pull the projector back, but then that would defeat the short throw purpose.
