|
|
For those that don't believe that G70s can wear tubes quickly, just got this sent to me from Australia, from a 560 hour set. I don't know how it was run, settings, etc, but the comment from the customer was:
'it only has 560 hours on it, so the tubes are clean'
Umm, sorry, no they are not.

Yup, that's about what one of mine looked like as well. only 900 hours. I think it was Craig that mentioned these units were built for performance NOT tube longevity. Sony must have made a killing selling replacement tubes to corporate and military clients.

Curt, is that wear on the green or blue tube? The outside area looks green, like you're pushing green to compensate. Maybe it's just the camera...
Don't forget to consider how the projector was used... i.e., I could see how a blue Windows desktop at contrast 80 might wear the blue tube the same in 560 hours that normal video at contrast 70 might wear the same tube in 1500 hours.

Crikey.
How is a G70 worth the cost of shipping?
It would cost about $1000 to get it to you, wouldn't it?

No, I meant the PICTURE was sent to me <grin>
The virgin phosphor is at the bottom of the pix, so yes, it's green wear.

It's possible it's a camera artifact, but yes, it does look like wear.

That's pretty weird to have that much green wear before blue wear, though... Was the guy watching a lot of golf?

I don't know the application. In EM focusing sets, the green always wears faster than the blue.

I don't know, this question has been asked a number of times on avs with no real answer(s).

I can't see how EM would have any impact whatsoever on wear... I would assume a color-filtered machine drives the green a bit harder and therefore wears it faster than would a non-filtered machine (to achieve the same brightness).

Tube run times can be reset so easily on a G70
Some people look like they do it every 20hrs or so

Because green makes up most of what we see.

That doesn't explain why the blue tube wears first on the ES focusing sets though..

Not really. Green is certainly predominant in our landscape, but outside of landscapes, you see a pretty even distribution of color - even leaning towards the earth tones with lots of the things around us containing more red component than green (or, to be more accurate, absorbing more green than red).

Again, if had to guess, it has nothing to do with EM vs. ES and everything to do with filtered/unfiltered. My theory would be that blue wears first on unfiltered sets because blue's spectral emission is lower for a given beam current. But, when you filter green, it's output drops enough, that when combined with naturally occurring greens (which is certainly more predominant in most colors than is blue), then green wears first.
I could be wrong, though... I'm just theorizing.
Obviously, this only applies if we're talking sort of a "normalized" or "average" content... If a guy watches primarily football or golf, then they're going to burn their green faster than somebody who watches primarily movies.
Thoughts?

Sets like Barco aren't filtered anything, so that blows that theory up.

I would think wear leveling would be well worth a shot with such a low hour tube though. What do they go for rebuilt now?

Maybe the phosphors have different wear rates.
