|

Hi all. I'm going to be installing temperature probes in my XG 1350 that will be monitored by my HTPC, and will in turn be set to trigger Eventghost to power down the PJ if set maximum temperatures are reached on any particular probe. Here is my questions....
1) Where would the exact critical locations be in the PJ to place the temp probes? (I will have 8 probes to start with but can expand to as much as 32 probes if necessary)
2) A list of safe upper end temperatures for these locations would be most helpful as well.
3) A list of factory baseline measurements if anybody has them.
I've read quite a few articles on fan mods and hush boxes but the range of numbers I've seen in them leaves me with information overload. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ray.

For #1) In general I would place them near heatsinks. The ones that come to mind are; the H-Def board heatsink 'tunnel' with the noisy little fan, the STK IC's mounted on the bottom of the PJ which are part of the Drive boards. Another probe could go in the cardcage, maybe near the system board or nearest the middle of the cage. Another probe could go inside the power supply. Then for fun put one on the HV anode to see if the PC survives a 10K zap. .
For #3) I seem to remember a nominal 110 degrees F at the H-Def tunnel as read by probe (not a factory number).
What PC device are you using for the temp inputs?

OK. Don't you think I'd get a better read under the anode cap? Seriously though. After much research I found a couple LCD displays one has a built in SCAB the other has an optional SCAB module (System Cooling Accessory Board). This feature has 4 fan controls and the ability to connect and read up to 32 individual thermal probes (T092 type). They are made by Crystalfontz. The LCD's that support SCAB come in Serial and USB and come in 16x2 20x2 and 20x4 character display versions. They are quite robust feature wise. They support LCDStudio, which in turn pre-installs plugins for...
AppMonitor

ATITool
ATITray
Date & Time
DisplayInfo
DriverCorePlugin
ExtendedTime
Fraps
G15Plugin
ITunes

and the ability to write your own plugins. They have the most powerful, adaptable, configurable LCD system I've seen. Makes iMon's stuff seem like utter crap.
I will use SpeedFan to do my monitoring and perform the PJ ESD if temps get too high.

I am getting the DB635-ALTFE-KU3 kit with a black aluminum bezel and 4 extra probes (8 total) (you can make your own probes if you prefer BTW and there is info on the site on how to do so) for a grand total of
LCD Kit - $137.54
4 Extra Probes - $20.00
FedEx Shipping - $63.00
Total $220.54 USD
Not the cheapest out there but lots of bang for the buck, and as the old saying goes "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"
Cheers!
Ray.

F drive, C drive, V Drive, A drive Heatsinks.
Def board heatsink.
Neckboard heatsinks (especially green).
Somewhere in Powersupply.
55 degrees is about as hot as I will let mine get, but it's maxing out at about 43 degrees in the hushbox now, with good airflow.

Looks like Mark and I are pretty much pointing to the same parts to sample. I believe the 1350 XG's didn't add the green neckboard fan until the 1 and 2 series probably because the red/blue are cooled by the side case fans.

Wouldn't you know it, I'll be short 1. Thanks for the replies. I do sort of live on the other side of the planet. Alberta Canada. That price id pretty much SOP when it comes to couriers. Most of that charge is the brokerage fees they rape us for. Oh and mine came with the green neck board fan (first run series). I'll post my results with this hardware as soon as I get it all set up, just to be sure it's everything the mfg. touts it to be.

The LCD arrived a couple days ago and the build quality of this thing is better than I've seen in most PC peripherals. The bracket is .040" steel with an aluminum face plate attached to it. There are pressed in nut inserts where the bracket bolts to the 5.25" bay and where the SCAB board is bolted on. Most companies will just punch and thread. The LCD panel is securely bolted to the bracket via 5 bolts. Even the weight of it is substantial. I'll post more after testing.
