So I went Digital w/ my daily TV... an LG LCD panel... it's got a really nice picture.. but when i'm watching tv from my dishnet HD dvr, the picture sizes are all over the place... sometimes the edges of the picture are off the screen, other times i have black bars on the sides... on the IFC i often get a picture in the center of the screen w/ black bars all around....

So i'm thinking if i get a processor....like a vp30 i should be able to have it scale the picture no matter what the dish throws at it.

Am i correct?

I read the VP30 had some issues John. I thought it was like audio dropout or something.

First of all, the picture sizes should be all over the place, John... Scope's gonna have black bars, 1.85 is going to have black bars, 4:3 is gonna have black bars... What exactly are you trying to eliminate?

If you get the "postage stamp" (letterboxed 4:3 video pillarboxed on a 16:9 screen), doesn't the TV and/or the Dish box have a simple zoom control?

I would think the TV ought have basic enough AR controls for what you need. But, then if the Dish box is stupid and upscaling with improper AR control, then by the time you output 16:9, the TV won't let you do AR control... Can you turn off upscaling in the Dish box for SD channels to give you AR control on the LG?

Failing all that, I would think something like the DVDO Edge would be adequate for your application if AR control is all you want...

Even with the ability to change aspect ratios in these video processors or even with zoom controls, one still has to do it manually(its NOT automatic). Even when you are watching an HD channel not all programming is transmitted in the 16:9 aspect ratio. One can easily see that with commercials, more often than not, with the black bars on the side(4:3 aspect ratio) so the programming will be changing aspect ratios "on the fly". That is just the way it is being transmitted.

Until eventually ALL programming is transmitted in HD and in a 16:9 aspect ratio(including commercials), these constant variances in picture sizes is just something one is going to have to live with for awhile.

I'm still not even clear on what the problem is. On the wife's 37" LCD living room setup, if an SD show comes on and it's stretched, and I want to watch in the proper AR, I tap the AR button a couple of times on the TV remote and its pillarboxed. If a scope movie is on, we watch it with the black bars. When is it in the wrong AR, and why can't you fix it with the TV? Again... I think the problem might be with the way the Dish box is configured.

I bet that your dish box IS outputting in 720p/1080i. I know that's how my Bell (Canada) receiver does it. I set the resolution, and it automatically upscales the content to 1080i. What this means is that if I'm watching SD 4:3 material, I get black bars on the side. Fortunately, my receiver also has an AR button that will adjust the picture for me (normal, stretch, partial zoom (which I like the best), and zoom). I imagine that there is probably a similar button on your receiver's remote... It won't necessarily be called AR though - mine is labelled as "Format".

It is the dish box. In HD mode the AR controls are disabled.

So i'm still looking for a processor scaler that won't break the bank.
