Hi,
I just discovered that my g90 began exhibiting some weird behaviors when accessing the menu. It would at sometime be shaky and sometime would be perfectly still. However, when I'm playing a movie it look perfect. But the shaky menu gets a little annoying when you're trying to access something. Is this something I can adjust in the menu? Or is it a physical problem?
Thanks a bunch

This is very interesting. Not to shout fire but I'm wondering if this is how the onset of ic421 failure reacts.
How many hours are on the machine? What is the projectors serial number? I wont ask for ic numbers just yet.
Oh, and to answer your question....no, there is no adjustment for this. Unless it happens to be a geometry or convergence issue but I doubt it. But you never know.

Yeah I read on another site that it can possibly be an ic failure. I do not have the serial number, but the hours are 1546 and it was manufactured in august 99.
But wouldn't an ic failure affect the projection as a whole, meaning both video source and menu?

Thats why I said....could this by the onset. Most failures we have seen so far did affect the video. But no one posted if there menus started doing it first. There is not doubt that bringing up the menu may be taxing ic421 more then just regular video playing. That hour count is also scaring me cause that seems to be the time frame for the ic failure. Hey, I'm not trying to say that it is the ic. It just has me curious. Hope its not for your sake.

Mac, while I agree with your diagnosis, I don't buy that menus drive a chip harder than regular content.
I think this is a simple mismanufacture of that chip, and it only came to light a few years after they were cranked out.
Ryozo, I'd just ignore it for now, but if you lose control of all (projector) functions save for power on/off, and the whole image shakes, you'll need a new Ya board which at this point are almost impossible to find.

Let me elaborate on just what I mean. I dont mean that the video content of the menu drives it harder, I mean that when you select the menu option the cpu will notify ic421 that adjustments may be coming or or are being executed and even that the menu resolution may make geometry or brightness/contrast and such changes that must be preformed by ic421. ic421 being the DAC controller for all the DAC's for geometry, convergence and brightness/contrast or G2.
I didn't mean the menu video itself. Just the commands involved. Basically, when the menu is selected other circuits are involved to produce such menu in its correct location and at the proper resolution of the main video.

As Mac has said, I hope for your sake that its not a IC421 that's on the brink of failure. One way to help diagnose this is if brightness and contrast adjustments register when the menu is brought up and causing the instability. When my chip failed the image was unstable and none of these controls were operational. btw my chip also failed at 1500 hrs. Good luck.

I can probably get a replacement YA board if Curt doesn't have one. Let me know if you need it.

Thank You all for your input. Just in the event I do need to buy one, how much would they be? I saw one that was for sale in decemember from dochlywd. Would the price be roughly the same?

Sounds about right. Its a lot but still far cheaper than what Sony were charging (~$1600 if memory serves me right which was the cost of a brand new board even though they were doing a component level repair on your board) when they still had stocks of the ic421 chip. If you have a substantial sum tied up in the projector and setup, its cheap insurance IMO, especially if you own a low hour unit.

I think Sony was actually charging near $3k for them It is a complex board.

My bad it was $1800
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=826882&highlight=ya+board+sony+repair
This was the new board price per the Sony broadcast parts site. When I was looking at different options to binning the pj, there was mention that a source in Japan had brand new boards about 18 months ago. This source apparently wanted $2200. In the end I found a parts G90 locally, scavenged the the YA and sold the extra's I didn't need such as HD10F lenses, input boards, 2 remotes and a ceiling mount. All told I'm out $800 but have a complete set of working boards and magnetics...just in case.
