I'm a mechanical engr student with a strong electronics background and have a burnt flyback transformer on a RCA p52923 after moving it to my home. I've worked on an old magnavox projection, but the tube leads from the flyback on this RCA do not have a rubber cap to just slip a screwdriver under and dishcharge. Just wondering a safe way to approach this without popping the plastic cap off the CRT board and letting it wing around. I just want to pull the main board out and look for loose joints, burnt HOT etc... Since it failed after moving it I am hoping to find a loose solder joint, or dried sink paste. It was very dusty, so if I don't find anything else wrong with it I hope to replace the flyback and the HOT and give her a try? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I'd hate to spend $60 on parts and burn them up, Thanks in advance. Tom

This might help...

Well, the first thing you need to check is....

Are you getting 143 volts to the horizontal output transistor in Standby mode?

If you don't, then you check the transistor for a short....

If it's not shorted, then you replace the power supply output transistor, the caps in the power supply and the Drive IC for the supply's output...

What makes you think the problem lies in the high voltage section ?

Great advice Tom! I had a 32" Trinitron, circa 1992, that blew the HOT after hundreds of hours of use. I purchased a DIY kit for the problem and installed it but it only lasted about half an hour...if that.

Turns out there were many more contributing factors requiring more than just a 'kit'. Burned a huge chunk of the board around the HOT and a couple other components thereby rendering it junk. I looked for a 'dead' model (bad CRT specifically) with an identical chassis to repair it for a couple years and finally bit the bullet and canned it.

I wish I had this thread at the time. I LOVED that TV...and also HATED having to lift that heavy SOB and cart it to the dump by myself. Shocked
