Cheap scope. Is it any good for CRT?

I found this in my home town priced at $40. Is there anything I can do with it?

You could do the mechanical white balance on a NEC with that.

15mhz is enough for that, you are looking at levels, not frequency response.

Ok, so I gather it is not particularly well suited for most CRT related tasks. Thanks!

What CRT related tasks exactly are you talking about?

The only reason I have ever needed one is to do the white balance.

Unless you want to get into the mod business, I'm not aware of any other need for a scope.

Guys!

A 15 meg scope tells you a lot more than a voltmeter, and you couldn't buy a good voltmeter new for $40.

Well, yes, but my voltmeter was about $15 over 10 years ago, and measures exactly the same as a Fluke.

You can get a good voltmeter for less than $10.

Hello

My point is, a waveform is worth a thousand Flukes for some kinds of troubleshooting.

Of course, a scope is only as good as it's last calibration. A $5K scope that is out of calibration isn't any better than the $40.00 scope that is Wink

For our purposes, calibrating it against the $10 multimeter would be fine.

Both of my scopes have an internal calibration test point, which again, is good enough for our purposes.

For $40, I think you can do better on eBay, mind you, then there's shipping. I'd wait a week, and offer $10. I don't think he'll have any takers...

Yep. Do that.

My scope cost me a six pack. The other one (a Tek) was free, but it has a dodgy selector switch (must PM Tinman one day).

And then you have to learn how to use it and know what you're looking at.
It might be interesting for someone to start a thread explaining the use and setup of a scope "Scope basics" or "Scopes 101" or something like that.
I'd bet that would end up a large sticky thread Wink

That get's you excited does it? Laughing

I actually wouldn't mind a scope thread either. Now if just ONE of the guys on Craigslist will respond when a 'scope comes up and actually follow through on a sale for me....

Well maybe I can do the white balance on my G70's. I think i'll try to low ball him like you said Curt. It just seemed like cheap deal on a piece of equipment that might be fun to learn how to play with. I assume there must be all sorts of things scopes are used for outside of CRT. What about antenna/radio stuff?

Hold out for something better. THIS is my main scope (I paid $1200 for it (sob!) (but I got a free FLuke 73 DMM with it!) It's over 20 years old, I use it almost daily:

http://cgi.ebay.com/LEADER-LBO-524-OSCILLOSCOPE-2CH-40MHz-GUARANTEED_W0QQitemZ230449502987QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBI_Oscilloscopes?hash=item35a7dc5b0b\

Or something cheaper and better:

Or really cheap, and better than the CL post:

Just don't go this old:

Very Happy

Sniffle, are you saying my scope is too old - http://www.heathkit-museum.com/test/hvmom-2.shtml (i actually own the one pictured in working order) to be fair, i use this for most normal stuff http://us.fluke.com/fluke/USEN/Portable-Oscilloscopes/Fluke-190.htm?PID=56045 (199c) - its a bit overkill, but i was given it as dead and breathed some life into it
