I am using an i1 Display 2, Calman, and a VideoEq Pro for my Front Projector.
Using the Veq, I got all the colors and Grey scale nearly perfect and the gamma on all 11 points is at or near 2.2.
But when I pop in a blu-Ray to admire my work, I still feel like I'm missing shadow detail. In fact, I know I am because when I bypass the Veq, effectively removing all of my hard work, all of this detail magically appears!
So I'm thinking my problem lies in gamma. My question is, then, should I not have it at 2.2? Should it be lower at the darker leves and 2.2 at the higher ones? Or vice-versa?
I watch movies in a near-dark basement. No ambient light at night except what reflects off of the white ceiling tiles.

I have an Epson Home Cinema 1080.
*a little background on these reports, in case it matters
Last night after a few, I came home and saved the final reports from my full calibration with the videoeq. Then I moved it to Preset1 and re-measured the 11 point grayscale and gamma tab and resaved. I tried to attach those reports and failed. After sleeping on it, I realized what I had to do but when I tried to reload the first full calibration, the gamma page was all zeros. So I just had to remeasure that, which is not a big deal, but it is a little different than before. It used to be almost perfect "2.2's" across the board.
Anyway, here are 2 PDFs. One from Custom1 and one from Preset1

Your custom curve looks perfect. Right along the line at 2.2. Your preset value has a gamma value that averages too low meaning there's too much gamma boost (lower numbers means more gamma boost).
Assuming the meter/software is working right my guess is that you're simply used to see too much gamma boost so anything less looks wrong because it's not what you're used to. The custom number certainly looks right to me.

Thanks Kal. I thought the curve looked perfect too. I just got worried when I moved to preset1 and suddenly could see things in the shadows. You're right, I'm probably just used to it that way.

Can I ask one more question? I've read that you should have a gamma curve at 2.4 or 2.5 for darker rooms. Is that just a personal preference?

Yes, give it a while. What often happens when you first calibrate is that it seems "off" because you're used to the crazy saturated colours and brightness. Then over time you start to realize that it looks more natural and you're actually seeing more and not less.

If the display has a very good black level (ie: CRT based) and you have a dark room then you can probably go with a little less gamma boost (ie: higher gamma value). I talk about this in my greyscale guide a bit. See: https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=10457.html
